Filed under: Hardware , Multimedia , Software , Apple , Developer We met them while they were shooting on the Apple Campus, and now the creators of the Dutch site onemorething.nl have posted their interview with Apple sound designer Jim Reekes (who also appears in Welcome To Macintosh ). They met up with Reekes while at Macworld in San Francisco a little while back — he’s the guy that programmed most of the sound in the early days, including the famous Mac startup chime and the legendary “sosumi” chime. What’s most interesting to me is all of the math behind it — while making music is traditionally seen as an art, there’s a lot of technical know how and information that actually went into the sound’s creation. Essentially, you’re creating a beep that has to represent a brand, and that mix of technical data with artistic representation is fascinating. Plus, Reekes definitely seems like a guy who’s been around both the technical and musical blocks a few times before, and it’s cool to hear him pontificate on all of the hard work he did back in the day. It’s also interesting to see someone who has such a personal tie to a sound that is so ubiquitous and means so much to so many people — an “ear-con,” he calls it. Very nice interview. Section: Apple Two Apple-inspired documentaries, Welcome to Macintosh and MacHEADS , are scheduled to be shown during the first week of the new year on CNBC. Save the date and set your DVRs to stun record, you won’t want to miss either. Welcome to Macintosh is a great documentary about the technology and products that have come from Apple over the years. Sure, we all know Apple changed the game in 1984 with the introduction of the Macintosh, but not all of us know the whole story. And that’s fine, because Welcome to Macintosh would love to show you.  And even if you do know everything, the nostalgia is enough to keep it very interesting. MacHEADS takes a very different look at the Apple community. This doc is all about the Apple fanboys we love and the rest of the tech community loves to hate. We’re a strange bunch, and this documentary doesn’t try to hide it. Welcome to Macintosh is scheduled to premiere on Monday, January 4th at 9:30PM ET, and MacHEADS is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, January 5th at 10:00PM ET. From there, the user can choose a song to play through the iPhone and have the lights turn on and off to the beat of the music. While it does have some ability to change settings and appearances, it is a pretty simple application that does what it says it does. When you first launch MusicalLights, you are presented with a scroll style selector to choose an image (see below) in landscape mode (this app doesn’t use portrait mode). A pop-up from the bottom of the application will walk you through all the steps as you go. It does come with some holiday themed stock images, but you can also add any image you want from your photo library or simply take one using the iPhone’s camera. Once you pick the image, it goes to full screen. To decorate it, tap where you want the lights to appear. A bar along the bottom of the application allows the user to return to the image selector and rename the picture, among other things. For instance, you can also choose to email your creation or delete the lights from it. However, the real fun part is in the bulb settings (see below) that allow you to change the color, style, and size of the bulbs. This allows room for some creativity based on the image you chose to decorate.

Section: Mac + Computers , Peripherals , Mice During the month of November, Apple doubled its mice sales, achieving 10 percent market share. This milestone—which brings them closer to computer-mouse market leaders Logitech and Microsoft—is a first for Apple, and was likely because of the Magic Mouse. The Magic Mouse is a bluetooth mouse with new support for multitouch gestures such as swipe for scrolling and pinch for zoom. The mouse doesn’t have any real buttons, and is one surface using touch sensors. It retails for $69 US. The hype and intial relase of the Magic Mouse could have been what gave Apple this increased market share. In this case, it may go down in the coming months, as with other Apple products such as Time Machine. “The Time Machine did great the first 8 to 10 weeks too, but then it kind of settled down,” NPD analyst Stephen Baker. The Magic Mouse is only supported on the Mac, currently no official drivers exist for Windows (although unofficial drivers are available ). Why Apple is not supporting PC users isn’t completely clear, but it could be to make the Magic Mouse a benefit to Mac users. Welcome to Macintosh , the feature length documentary that explores the many ways Apple, Inc. has changed the world, jumped from the international, independent film festival circuit to pay-per-view cable TV Wednesday. The film, which relies on notable personalities associated in one way or another with Apple, such as Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the original Macintosh, and long-time Mac evangelist Guy Kawasaki, tells the inside story of what makes Apple different and will now be available to over 20 million subscribers to the Comcast cable network in both the Pay-Per-View section and the “Movie” section of Comcast’s On Demand service. “The goal was to make a film that you can show to anyone, even someone that has never used a computer, and have them understand why so many people love Macintosh,” says Josh Rizzo, Co-Director. “Availability to all US Comcast customers goes a long way toward completing that goal.” If you’ve seen it, you know Welcome to Macintosh is really a love song to Apple and though the film is in no way authorized, sponsored or otherwise approved by the company, it’s a good bet there will be cheering in Cupertino once the ancillary sales begin to roll in from people who come to Apple through having seen the film. Section: Apple , Reviews Welcome to Macintosh is the definitive Apple documentary. It covers the history of Apple: its people, products and community. It’s the kind of documentary you actually want to see, not the kind you dreaded in high school. It has real production value and is on a topic you obviously have an interest in and care about. If you could use a lesson on Apple history, then you owe it to yourself to pick up Welcome to Macintosh . The movie features some of the same people who are in MacHEADS , but don’t dismiss these two as being the same; they are, in fact, quite different.  MacHEADS focuses on the community, where as Welcome to Macintosh focuses on Apple history; things like Apple’s beginnings, and how products originated.  They even have an entire segment dedicated to the start up sound. As strange as this may read, that may have been the section I most enjoyed in this film. Over the years, I’ve become attached to that sound, as simple as it may be. Actually, Welcome to Macintosh is really the documentary I was expecting when I viewed MacHEADS . There is much more of a history lesson, complete with enough behind the scenes clips to keep you interested.
