Twitter Brings Out The Lists

Twitter has officially released a new "lists" feature, allowing you to follow a group of twitter users. This functionality has been hinted at before, but today they actually started slowly rolling it out to users. The feature allows a Twitter user the ability to hand-pick a group of Twitter users and create a list based on that. Your list can then be found by going to twitter.com/#/ username/listname and other Twitter users can follow a whole list.  In typical Internet beta testing releases, this feature is being slowly rolled out to Twitter users. Tweet Directly in Safari With Safari140

One of the reasons I can’t completely cross over to using Safari 4 as my full-time browser, aside from its dangerous incompatibility (considering my line of work) with some WordPress features, is its lack of add-on support. Firefox’s rich user community and extensibility makes sure that if there’s an add-on I need or find useful, it’s probably out there and available for download. Because the vast majority of my time on the computer is spent in a browser, the more that browser can do, the better. There are ways to get around the lack of extensive add-on support in Safari, and one is Input Managers . A new one designed for those who like to tweet is making the rounds, and as long as you’re more into the saying than the listening side of Twitter, it could suit your needs. Personally, it’s exactly the sort of thing I need, since it removes the distraction of the tweet stream while still allowing me to post links of interest or comments while working. The extension, called Safari140 , features automatic URL shortening support, and character limiting to make sure you stay under the Twitter limit (hence the “140″ in the name). While browsing, you can access Safari140’s post window at any time either by going to File > Post to Twitter (which is added when you install the extension) or by pressing “Ctrl+T”. The post dialog box will immediately appear, with the web address of the site you’re currently browsing already entered in the text box by default. Safari140 works with both Safari 3 and Safari 4 Beta, and it’s a free download. Some people are apparently skittish when it comes to Input Managers, but I’m loving the beta, and just want a way to tweet, so it works for me.

When our desire to connect and communicate with one another crashed headlong in to the digital behemoth that is the Internet, we ended up with Twitter : a true 21st Century social phenomenon. Like a chimerical parrot, each head squawking a different one-liner, Twitter can seem odd to the casual observer. Allowing users to post ultra-short updates, a quick tour ’round Twitter will find normal folk, celebrities and even politicians rubbing shoulders and swapping verbs (even TAB is tweeting away). FastCall Enables Quick Dialing On the iPhone

Last week, the folks from EdgeRift released an update to their iPhone app, FastCall . Now, there are many apps for the iPhone that enable a faster form of dialing, but FastCall takes a different approach. For those who are used to how the Palm OS and Windows Mobile quick dialing works, then having FastCall at your fingertips will make you quite happy. Here is what their main application window looks like (from their site – sorry – don’t want to show all of my contacts). As you can see, you can quickly find contacts by pressing the keypad to filter through the results. One thing I can say is that for those of us with a lot of contacts (500+), FastCall is very fast at rendering the results. Also, once you have found the contact you want to interact with, you can then either quickly call, email or SMS them. (more…)
