Voice Choices: Creating Speed Dial "Bookmarklets" For Google Voice

Photographer/gadgeteer David Friedman was one of the folks caught flat-footed when Apple pulled all the Google Voice apps from the App Store. Thinking quickly, he hacked together a way to create “bookmarklets” in Safari that would speed-dial contacts with a quick tap. The hack, with explanation, is posted on Friedman’s Ironic Sans tech blog . (Gizmodo posted a similar speed-dial technique , which hinges on obtaining the 406 number associated with your party’s GV.)

So bad ol’ Apple just took away your Palm Pre’s ability to suckle at the iTunes teat. Is that what’s bothering you, Bunky? Never fear. Salling Software’s Media Sync restores that functionality, whether you’re a Wintel or Mac user. Both flavors are free for the basic edition; a US$22/EU15 upgrade promises faster synching. And the Pre’s not the only phone invited to the party: check out the compatibile devices chart to see if your Crackberry, G1, or other phone can benefit from Media Sync’s end run on the House of Jobs. Not content to get his Playstation and GameBoy emulators running on a cracked iPhone 3GS , the Z-man has worked his magic on the new kid on the block, the Palm Pre. As per the above video, Zod’s Pre is running the Wipeout game courtesy of his psx4all emulator. Pre Cautions: Web OS 1.0.4 Error During Update

Today Palm released a twelve meg update for the Palm Pre – the OS 1.0.4 update - which killed the ability to homebrew apps without “rooting” your Pre . Which, if nothing else, makes the recent SDK leak even more timely. After updating you may get some errors, but don’t fear, for a simple reset will fix the problem. We updated our Palm Pre to 1.0.4 ( by the way, Palm makes you update whether you like it or not…BUT, you can cancel the update. ) After updating, we got the error above, and had to reset the phone. After resetting, the phone began to work perfectly normally. As usual, keep in mind that it’s always better to wait rather than jump into the update. Let the others (like us, as you can tell by this article) test it for you first. Go here to learn how to reset your Palm Pre. Also in the Palm Pre universe, much like the “Spy Vs. Spy” dual going on between Apple and the Dev-Team over jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS (see elsewhere in this fine bloggeroo), Palm is crossing swords with homebrew programmers, who are ready to write apps and exploit chinks in the armor of the newly-minted Pre.

Everything you need to know about iPhone internet tethering: Internet tethering on the iPhone has a lengthy history. (For those who don’t know what internet tethering is, it basically allows you to connect to WiFi or 3G on your laptop through your iPhone by turning your iPhone into a “modem”.) There was once an application in the iTunes App Store called NetShare. The app appeared, disappeared, then appeared again, and finally disappeared for good. Since the jailbreaking phenomenon, PdaNet has been one of the most downloaded applications in Cydia through the ModMyI depository. PdaNet Fortunately for us iPhone users, applications like PdaNet will no longer be necessary, because full (legit Apple built) internet tethering is now available on the iPhone OS 3.0. PdaNet is one of many applications that have become obsolete since the release of iPhone OS 3.0. The new iPhone OS 3.0 was released today, but was installed by many users last week thanks to the torrent leak of the iPhone OS 3.0 Golden Master. The new firmware is great, and offers many excellent new features . The problem is, however, that due to AT&T’s incompetence, internet tethering and MMS messaging will not be available to 3.0 users until the end of the summer at best. The reason that tethering is delayed is because AT&T is still trying to form some kind of a pricing plan (to maximize the amount of money they rob from you.) Allegedly, the pricing plan we’re most likely to end up with is $70/month for unlimited tethering. Something tells me only 7 people in all of America would actually pay $70/month for tethering.

If you’ve upgraded to iTunes version 8.x recently, you may have experienced a problem when trying to view items in your shopping cart, or agreeing to upgrade apps that you already have installed: We could not complete your iTunes Store Request. An unknown error occurred (5002). That’s really helpful… reed more after the fold. If you get the 5002 error attempting to browse your shopping cart, the favored solution is to go to iTunes Preferences, then the Store tab, and select “Buy and download using 1-Click” instead of “Buy using a shopping cart.” (Clearing the items in your cart also seems to eliminate the error message.) Another (Mac OS X-specific) flavor of the 5002 arises if there are permission errors in or around the iTunes Music folder. According to a thread on the Apple Support Forum , the follow steps can fix the permissions problem: Log in using an administrator account. Locate your iTunes Music folder. If you are not sure where your iTunes Music folder is located, launch iTunes, open Preferences from the iTunes Menu and click Advanced. This will show you where the iTunes Music Folder is located. Select the iTunes Music folder. From the File menu, choose Get Info . Click the disclosure triangle to open the Ownership and Permissions section of the Info window.

Very often people call you, and very often you don’t want to answer. A great way to stop the ringing of the phone and not hang up on the person is to send the call directly to voicemail. This is an extremely simple and easy iPhone trick. How do you do it? Double click the Sleep/Wake button on the top right of your iPhone. If you are using headphones, simply double click the microphone button. The only downside to this trick is, well, listening to people’s voicemails.
