iPhone applications and games range from mildly amusing the outright mandatory for anyone with an iPhone. Here are mini reviews for a game that makes you manage a lawn, one that helps you give a stay of execution for a stick figure, and one that gives you a world of music at your fingertips. Sunday Lawn In gaming it seems that almost every concept has already been co-opted, which has sent developers reaching. Over the last few years it has seemed that activities normally seen as chores have become the source of gaming premises. Donut Games’ Sunday Lawn is a, ahem, lawn mowing game. The basic framework is to mow a lawn in the most efficient way possible. To do this you set the direction for where you little animated worker will go with his lawnmower, and to get the largest number of points you want to plan for the largest strips of mowing at a time. This means that you want to get the biggest patches of sod covered in the fewest number of moves. This is a basic principle behind a number of classic puzzle games, which Sunday Lawn is with a more colorful palette. There is a lot of depth in Sunday Lawn as the gameplay options are numerous. Even amongst these different gameplay types you have a graduated level system that will actually keep you playing for quite a while. You can complete the level adequately enough to progress on, and then you can also go back to try and complete it according to even more rigorous standards. These all add to the overall package with Sunday Lawn, but if the basic premise does not work for you it will not matter much in the end. The gameplay is fun, to a point, but there is not really enough here to legitimize enough gameplay time to get through all the features.

Instead, Auntie is responding to a comment left on her last post about whether you should buy the Wi-Fi only iPad or wait for the 3G version . That’s because Aunt TUAW has a bug up her sleeve about GPS and its role on the iPhone, the iPad, and its tie to social media. Without further ado, here’s today’s “letter” and Auntie’s response. Dear Aunt TUAW, I’m on Facebook, but why do people need to read Facebook updates when they’re traveling? Whatever happened to looking out the window at new places? And geez, how about a simple paper map?!? If I have to go somewhere new, I print out a Google map before the trip or bring the old Rand-McNally. I may be weird, but look at all the dough I saved. I live in northern New Mexico with wilderness available just a few miles outside of town. We hike and walk everywhere, assuming the MUD isn’t so bad.

Here are a few new and popular iPhone games and applications that may be for you, and maybe even one that is for everyone. Meebo It seemed for a moment in time that cell phone text messaging took the place of the instant message all together. The instant message was rather primitive, regulated simply to those who hung around their desktops constantly. AIM and MSN Messenger remained useful in those places, but if you really wanted to get somewhere you had to dot over a text message. The problem here is that these text messages have become relatively expensive and do not necessarily tap into the same network that your instant messenger did. Thankfully the iPhone has but together an effort to integrate all these remote communication modules into one Zeitgeist of a touch device. Now you can get all of these services right from your touch screen, and even set them up for push functions that utilize the iPhone's unique features. For those of us that operate on multiple IM wavelengths it is annoying to have to download several costly applications and navigate them separately, which is why Meebo has come in to rescue us. Meebo, which will also allow Push notifications, allows the integration of all of these. You do have to register a Meebo account new, but you can do this quickly from your iPhone

Eyes Forward: Evidence That Video Chat Is iPhone-Bound

Amazing what you can find if you look hard enough, and know where to look. The “where” in this case is the iPhone 3.2 SDK. First up, a couple of icons to accept or decline/end video. So why would one accept or decline video? Probably because it’s incoming video — as in video chat? Innnnnteresting… What’s that? “Inconclusive,” you mutter? Let’s code-grovel a little further. AHA! Here’s a “VideoChat” reference hidden in some of the underlying iPad telephony apps. And the hits just keep on coming, with an “iChat” reference in the Video Toolbox. Obviously, none of these icons or code work with the current batch of iDevices, as they are all lacking front-facing cameras. So would that also suggest a hardware upgrade in the future? In essence, instead of being the player, you are the ball. It starts off by letting you know that it is finding music to stream from codvita.com which, according to their site, is a London pop band. The music can be turned off with the switch on the iPhone, but the songs are actually pretty good. When you first open the app, you are greeted with a list of tips that walk you through how to play the game. I’d suggest reading these tips because without them you’ll be completely lost. Even after reading them the first time you may be completely lost when you start the game because it is a little confusing. Basically, the tips will tell you how to stay alive and score points while also pointing out where the various points are on the screen that will give you feedback. After deciding to start a new game, you can then choose to have four, ten, or 22 opponents on the field, with half of them being on the red and half on the blue.
