Filed under: Apple , iPad Dear Aunt TUAW, I am planning on getting an iPad WiFi+3G when they become available, but I am still undecided on which (storage) size I should get. I currently have a 16GB iPhone 3GS which comfortably, for now, holds all my media needs. While I have a lot of music and photos and some video I don’t feel the need to have it all on my phone at one time. Looking at what I store on my iPhone I think an iPad 32GB would more than fit my needs — but will my media files be larger on the iPad with the larger format of the device? I don’t expect that my iTunes songs will take up anymore than they do on the iPhone, but will the format of pictures and video take up more storage space? With AT&T increasing the download size limit over 3G it got me wondering if 32GB on the iPad will be more like a 16GB iPhone. At this point I would be deciding between the 32GB and 64GB. Just wondering if the $100 price difference would be better spent buying the 32GB and putting the $100 toward a year’s worth of 3G connectivity? Hot on the heels of the 3.0.1 Aperture 3 update yesterday, Apple has released another update expanding Digital Camera Raw support to nearly a dozen more cameras in Aperture and iPhoto ‘09. This update extends RAW image compatibility for Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’09 for the following cameras: – Hasselblad H3DII-50 – Leica M9 – Leica X1 – Olympus E-P1 – Olympus E-P2 – Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 – Pentax K-7 – Pentax K-x – Sony Alpha DSLR-A500 – Sony Alpha DSLR-A550 – Sony Alpha DSLR-A850 RAW mode allows you to import images with no compression loss whatsoever, for the highest quality pictures.

BBC To Offer Up News/Sports Apps Soon

The BBC announced today that it will soon offer iPhone apps for its news and sport content. The apps will then be followed by version for the BlackBerry and those running the Android operating system. The BBC said that the apps were developed because more people use "sophisticated handheld devices" to view content. CCS Insight analysts think the apps would "increase tension between publishers of paid-for content and those reliant on other revenue." Some think the news industry is struggling to find the means to get rolling within the digital world. "Whilst the BBC’s impulse to enter an already crowded news and sport apps market place is understandable, the move belies the fundamentally competitive nature of the Corporation’s approach to new services," said Emily Bell, director of digital content at the Guardian. "Applications are a long way away from being ‘broadcast’ media, and, unlike the web, they form a market which the BBC is seeking to disrupt." Bell continued saying the "considerable cost" of developing apps for all platforms meant the BBC was in "territory most publishers could not afford to inhabit." On the contrary, Erik Huggers, BBC director of future media and technology, said the BBC audience "want to access the digital services that they have paid for at a time and place that suits them. Today’s announcement means that we are catching up with our audiences," he explained at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As for the actual app, which is due in April, will provide content from the BBC News website, including features such as written stories, correspondent blogs as well as audio and video. 4th gen iPhone to be taller and include front facing camera?

Section: Rumors , iPhone / iPod touch / iPad , iPhone iResQ has posted some pictures of what they believe to be the glass for the 4th generation iPhone. There are two notable differences from the current iPhone glass. First, it’s taller (1/4 inch) and it has an extra hole. Gee whiz, I wonder what we think that’s for… The rumor that just won’t die. This extra hole in the glass certainly could be for an extra, front facing camera for video chatting. I won’t deny it; I want one, that’s for sure. But at the same time, I find it too good to be true. Parts like this aren’t that difficult to fabricate, so I’m not totally sold. iResQ claims this part is from a very reliable source, and that I don’t doubt. I’m just having a hard time thinking Apple would want to change the size of the iPhone. While I’d like to have a larger screen, an increase of just a quarter of an inch seems unnecessary, especially after we all have accessories that depend on the current form factor. At least it appears to be the same width.

This week I have three, along with some other great apps for your downloading and installing pleasure. Don’t be a geek, take a peak…at the list below. Sorry, I heard that in Vegas a couple of weeks ago and I was just dying to use it somewhere. Anyway, here’s this week’s list: Rock Band Free – It has only one song, “Learning to Fly” by the Foo Fighters, but you can play any of the instruments in the game. There’s guitar, bass, drums and vocals in three levels of difficulty. I’m sure you already know the gameplay, but just for good measure, it’s very similar to Tap Tap Revenge and other tapping games. You have to push the right buttons at the right time, just like a real rock star. Should be great fun, and remember, you can always use a sound system to really rock out with your dock out! The White House – The official app of the White House and the Obama administration. It provides you with updates from just about everywhere. There’s info, pictures, and videos, and next week they’re even going to live stream the State of the Union address, though we’ll likely be doing something much more tablet oriented around that time. Labyrinth 2 Lite – The sequel to the immensely popular Labyrinth game. You control the table with which to guide the marble from point A to point B. Obviously, it’s harder than it sounds, and this sequel doesn’t make it any easier. More challenging, and more fun. You’ll like this one. Sherlock Holmes: The Game is Afoot Free – Every good movie needs a good game, right? Here you are.

According to Download Squad , Divvyshot is a new photo-sharing service with both a web interface and iPhone app to help you combine all of your photos from one event into a single album that an entire group can access. The developer is even promising to add desktop applications to the equation soon as well. The showiest way to share photos using Divvyshot is to hold two iPhones together and shake them. The result is you can quickly share virtual stacks of photos between two handsets without having to actually sync or transfer the files — instead, the iPhone user you’re sharing with gets access to the already-uploaded photos on the Divvyshot servers, and the second device pull those files down from the cloud. To speed the process up, Divvyshot only downloads iPhone-quality versions of the photos, similar to how iTunes optimizes your iPhoto library prior to syncing your pictures. However, anyone you’ve given access to your albums can hit the website and download high-resolution versions as well. Rounding out Divvyshot’s sharing abilities, the service also integrates nicely with Flickr, Twitter and Facebook — almost a necessity in today’s world of social networking — which makes sharing your photos on multiple sites quick and easy. Compatible with both iPhone and iPod touch, Divvyshot is available as a free download from the App Store and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
