Dr. Gregory House can now do more with his iPhone than just watch his favorite soap operas. Let’s list some medical apps: ImageVis3D Mobile ( free ) lets users manipulate, display and rotate 3D images from CT (computerized tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans, as well as other images. AnatomyLab (the most expensive of the three at US$9.99) is a highly-detailed virtual dissection of a human cadaver with forty different views available — strong stomach not included, but highly recommended. For the general public and/or more squeamish users, MyBody (US$1.99) is a less explicit version of AnatomyLab that shows the human body inside and out. Have fun!

Apple Re-enables Promo Codes for 17+ Rated Apps

Since last year , Apple has allowed all iPhone developers to request 50 promotional codes for their application when first added to the App Store, a policy that makes it easy to offer free applications for trial, review or a competition. It allows easier initial promotion of an app, removing the need for a more complicated process of ad-hoc distribution or offering iTunes gift cards. A few weeks ago, Apple stopped offering promotional codes to developers of applications rated 17+. This decision sparked controversy, with developers angry that they were no longer able to easily offer promotional copies of their software to reviewers. The change was particularly difficult to stomach for many developers due to the already ambiguous interpretation of the 17+ rating. According to Apple, the guidelines for this rating category are as follows: Applications in this category may also contain frequent and intense offensive language; frequent and intense cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence; and frequent and intense mature, horror, and suggestive themes; plus sexual content, nudity, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs which may not be suitable for children under the age of 17. Although the statement seems fairly definitive, in practice, various other applications are being awarded a 17+ rating. For instance, any app that offers access to the Internet also falls into the 17+ category as it could be used to access objectionable content. Developer Response Various news agencies picked up on the change, putting pressure on Apple to re-consider its decision. It seems that Apple has responded and, unusually, reversed the change in policy to now offer promo codes regardless of age rating. The Unofficial Apple Weblog is reporting that various developers have this functionality re-enabled, though no official comment has been made by Apple

25 Years of Mac: Engineer Steve Capps Talks

Engineer and programmer Steve Capps, who worked on Lisa, the Finder and Macintosh system utilities, talks about his work on the original Macintosh team with the guys at RetroMac Cast in a two-part podcast ( episodes 115 and 116). Capps got started by automating a library in college, then went to do the same at Xerox before landing at Apple in 1981. He was chosen to work for the Mac team because he had “the right chops at the right time.” Capps was working on a printer drive for the Lisa team, when Steve Jobs lost interest in Lisa and put the steam behind the Mac, calling Capps over. “Great to talk about the old glory days,” Capps , who went on to work on Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer, said. AT&T Promises To Double Speed of 3G Network, Supporting Faster iPhones

AT&T is promising more and faster bars. CC-licensed photo by daBinsi (Vegas). Hot on the heels of the faster iPhone expected this summer, AT&T is promising to double the speed of up its 3G network. AT&T on Wednesday said it is bumping its 3G network to support HSPA 7.2 , which offers download speeds up to a peak of 7.2 Mbps, which is double its current capacity. The rollout will begin later this year, AT&T says. The company also promises it will “introduce multiple HSPA 7.2-compatible laptop cards and smartphones beginning later this year.” One of the smartphones is likely Apple’s next-generation iPhone. Apple is expected to introduce a faster iPhone that will support HSPA 7.2. The new iPhone will also likely have a faster processor, which will be better able to handle the faster data stream, quickly updating content like web pages and maps.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Cult of Mac , Podcasts , Apple , Apple History The guys over at the RetroMacCast sent us a link to their latest episode , featuring an interview with none other than Rob Janoff , the designer of Apple’s old rainbow Mac logo. The interview starts a little less than halfway into the show, and it’s cool to hear a voice right out of Apple’s past. They talk about the inception of the logo — how Apple came to Janoff’s firm and what they originally asked for in terms of a design. He actually had very little guidance when first creating the logo, and in fact hadn’t seen any of Apple’s branding or even heard of the company before he created the now-iconic image. He also talks about how lucky he was in choosing the image — he saw it as a pretty obvious choice to use a picture of fruit for a company named after said fruit , but like any great logo, there ended up being layers of meaning behind that apple bite (or byte, as he points out). Nothing really earthshaking in the interview (he hasn’t had contact with Apple since, and even he says that the mythology behind the company has much more to do than just the familiar logo ), but hey, if you’re hanging out today during Memorial Day and need something interesting to listen to while barbecuing, you can tune in and learn a little bit about Apple’s corporate history. It would seem Jeopardy has taken over TheAppleBlog for the day! Jeopardy is one of those “classics” that I remember watching at grandma’s house growing up. Unfortunately, I was absolutely horrible at getting any of the questions right.
