Executive Pablo Calamera, who was in charge of MobileMe while at Apple, is off to work as the CTO of Thumbplay , a company that peddles ringtones and music to mobile devices. HR shouldn’t have to change the big “35,000 employed worldwide” sign, though: former Mozilla security chief Window Snyder was picked up by Apple this week. She’ll jump in as a senior security product manager, a job that will take advantage of her work both at Mozilla and previously at Microsoft, where she worked on both Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Sure, she’s got the experience, but has she ever worked for a company that does this for its incoming employees? Didn’t think so. The list was based on a poll of 4,200 executives across the world’s top companies, and by the highest margin ever, they picked the Cupertino-based ” mobile device company ” as the world’s most admired brand. Obviously the millions of MacBooks, iPhones, and iPods played a factor, but it sounds like the iPad sealed the deal this year. BMW’s CEO is quoted waxing poetic about Apple’s brand power: “The whole world held its breath before the iPad was announced. That’s brand management at its very best.” GE has actually had the most appearances at number one on the list, and Apple needs to stay high for two more years to take that record. But it’s certainly possible — if the iPad is as popular as expected, and Apple follows it up next year with an updated version and the kind of software revolution that the iPhone brought to handheld computing, they probably will nail down the top spot yet again. Filed under: Apple After a many-hours outage, the Apple developer site is back — and the changes are profound, at least on the Mac end of things. On the iPhone side, users are required to update their profiles, take a rather obnoxious survey and agree to new terms [Developer credentials required for link]. Unfortunately, Apple needs to improve the default survey formatting. iPhone developer John Fricker points out, “If you go to My Profile you can take the iPhone developer ’survey’ with better formatting.” But it’s on the Mac side where the big news is. Apple has replaced the select and premiere memberships with a single-tiered, low-priced Mac Developer program. They write: We recently introduced a new Mac Developer Program that replaces ADC Premier, Select, and Student Memberships. If you are a current ADC member, you can continue to access your resources and benefits through the end of your membership year. I love having database functionality at my disposal, but I’ve never wanted to bother with learning FileMaker just to keep track of my CD collection, family recipes or the Appletell writing staff. More importantly, I didn’t want to pay for the functionality of FileMaker when I knew I wouldn’t use it beyond 20% of its capabilities. So, I’d end up buying multiple proprietary database programs. One for tracking movies and CDs. One for books. One for recipes.

You know, something even your mom could do without your help. We were pointed in this direction by the SF Weekly’s Music Blog , who, like us, were completely agog at what Microsoft had to offer. No one said this was going to involve math. Filed under: Hardware , Apple , iPad Apple may have finally gotten the chip they wanted with the iPad’s A4 , but a little freedom from contracting with other chip makers didn’t come cheap. In a piece about how to make silicon chips, the New York Times estimates the cost to put a chip like the A4 together at a whopping $1 billion. And that’s just for a design — actually making a state-of-the-art factory to create the chips will run you a cool $3 billion. The NYT is just estimating for all companies here — especially with Apple’s purchase of PA Semi , they probably got the design for a relative song, and they’re working with contractors to actually make the chips, rather than building their own factories. So $1 billion is a higher estimate than evidence would make you suspect. For Apple, though, whatever the purchase price is, it was worth it — watching Jobs talking about this chip and its power conservation (the iPad will last for a month on standby!) a few weeks ago, you get the sense that he’s really excited to finally be in charge of his own chip destiny rather than having to rely on Intel or another silicon company to do it for them. And heck, even if they did spend $4 billion to make the A4, Apple can build ten more chips and separate factories to build them with all of the cash they’ve built up . Considering the freedom that Apple got out of their A4 design, whatever it cost was probably a check they were more than happy to write

In the first year that Macworld Expo San Francisco did not see Apple attend, the speculation leading up to the show was centered on what Macworld Expo would be like without its best known exhibitor. David Pogue gave us a look at the world without Apple, and then the show itself gave us a look at Macworld Expo without Apple. The results in both cases were still pretty enjoyable. In any other year, the start of Macworld Expo would mean looking forward to a riveting Stevenote with all sorts of product announcements. This year, the Expo started with David Pogue of the New York Times leaping on stage to do his best Steve Ballmer impersonation .
