If you read on, you have been forewarned. TUAW dug up today’s nugget of pre-iPad hysteria , which comes courtesy of a little company called Hip Handmaidens. The Hipsters sell handcrafted wares “born out of a bizarre group of talented housewives,” and their latest creation is the iMaxi — which the company claims is “the only Apple iPad case with protective wings.” Now you can say, you’ve truly seen it all. "With its durable vinyl outer layer and plush, quilted-cotton sleeve, the iMaxi helps keep your iPad clean and dry,” the Hip Handmaidens website description reads. “Plus, the iMaxi’s Velcro-latched, advanced wing design wraps snugly around your device, so your iPad always stays where it should. Best of all, it shields it from all those unsightly and embarrassing data leaks that would make any motherboard worry!" But it doesn’t stop there… oh heavens no. “Each handmade iMaxi can be easily customized to fit your active lifestyle,” the website claims. “Choose from white, white/red, or all-red interior options. Or if you don’t see a color you like, just ask! We can even use red thread on the interior for that special…uh…’lived in’ look.” For anyone still left reading, you can pre-order your iMaxi case for only $30 (that’s $10 off the regular price until March 30) with the click of a button and have it waiting for your iPad to arrive later this month. Or as Mastercard might put it: “Apple iPad… $499. Hip Handmaid iMaxi… $30. The shame on your face when you carry them both around… Priceless.”

If you thought the smartphone patent battles would end with Nokia vs. Apple, think again: Cupertino has just filed a lawsuit against HTC. PR Newswire is reporting on Apple’s latest patent battle, with the company filing a lawsuit against HTC for “infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware.” In a sign that Cupertino isn’t messing around, the lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) as well as in U.S. District Court in Delaware. "We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours." Apple recently filed a countersuit in their legal battle with cellphone giant Nokia, with the ITC planning to look into both companies’ claims of patent infringement, according to AppleInsider .

Filed under: Hacks , iTunes , Apple Our friends over at OS X Daily passed along their story noting that Apple’s site for iTunes Affiliates was vulnerable to a cross-site URL trick, letting you substitute your own images for the ones normally displayed on the page. Since the site is intended to let websites display a custom top banner, this was ‘as designed’ — at least until jokesters began taking advantage. The trick works (or at least, it did) by taking the default URL from the web browser and replacing a few things like the artist name, album name, album thumbnail source and the image link. The Internet moves pretty fast, though. As I was typing this, Apple removed the top banner altogether, preventing the customized image display. No more pranks for us. In any case, OS X Daily pointed out that the image issue could allow malicious folks to redirect would-be Apple visitors to malware sites or other bad destinations. Even an innocent image viewer that appears within an iframe on a branded page can cause problems; that’s what the folks at Wired found out last January, when someone took advantage of their image tool to post a hoax “Steve Jobs had a heart attack” news story . Props to Apple’s web development team, though, for taking this down within the ten minutes it took me to finish the post. Steve Jobs may not be back to work yet, but Fake Steve is. Fake Steve Jobs (aka Newsweek columnist Dan Lyons) has started blogging again. Over the weekend, Fake Steve made a series of off-color jokes about Steve Jobs’ recent liver transplant. The posts are classic Fake Steve  — sick, tasteless and LOL funny. Today it’s the foundation for all modern pre-installed Windows systems. It replaced the aging FAT (File Allocation Table) file system with a leaner, meaner standard. It’s more secure, more flexible, and has more built-in gadgets than a Swiss Army Knife. It’s NTFS, of course — the New Technology File System. I grew up with NTFS. I was there when it was introduced with Windows NT, and I insisted on reformatting every Windows machine I ever got my hands on — wiping out stuffy old FAT32 — with a file system so much more capable and pleasing. Yeah, OK, I was total nerd about the whole thing, I know. So it came as something of a surprise to me that I didn’t think about file systems when I was switching to the Mac. And I didn’t think about file systems when I took a terabyte hard drive from my old PC and put it in my Mac Pro. And I didn’t think about file systems when I first clicked-around that drive’s contents in Finder. I did think about file systems when I tried to save changes I made to an old document that migrated to my Mac along with the drive. I was rewarded for my Saving efforts with an unwelcome dialogue telling me I couldn’t write to the drive. And then the penny dropped. My big new shiny Mac Pro was using HFS+ while that second HDD was formatted with NTFS.

From the “what the &#^* were they THINKING?!? ” department: The App Store, whose policies for admitting or denying apps has been inconsistent at best and downright clueless at worst, recently offered a game called Baby Shaker. Yes, it’s as bad as the name suggests: you shake your iPhone/iPod Touch violently to silence the wails of a crying baby.  The game ends when the baby dies. Now we’re fans of SOUTH PARK and John Waters films and ” Truly Tasteless Jokes ” and the like, but jee-zus — is NOTHING sacred? Luckily, less than two hours after CNET posted a story about this atrocity, Apple — you’ll pardon the expression — mercy-killed the app. So I guess it’s safe to say that THIS game won’t be hitting iTunes any time soon: (That’s a…I SAY, THAT’S A JOKE, SON!  JOKE, THAT IS!)
