You don’t want to clog up your system, but deleting things would be a waste of your money. The best choice, therefore, is to save your library on an external drive. No, not for storage, for active use. Let’s look at how you can put your whole iTunes library on an external drive and still use it. These comes in two steps. Step One: Organize your iTunes music folders automatically. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences. In the resulting window, click the Advanced button. Apple Delivers Minor Updates Mac Pro and Xserve

Apple sometimes provides updates to its products stealthily, in the dead of night, if said updates don’t merit a dedicated press event. That happened yesterday to both the Mac Pro desktop computer and the Xserve rack-mountable server. Both are minor updates, but will be of great interest to those looking to buy either type of machine. The Mac Pro got a new option in the processor customization department, a 3.33GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processor for an additional $1,200. As of yet, there’s no option to double up the 3.33GHz version of the quad-core to create a more powerful 8-core machine on the more expensive configuration of the Mac Pro. You can also now outfit your Mac Pro with 2TB hard drives, instead of the 1TB option at which capacity previously maxed out. That means the official total capacity of the Mac Pro, as configured in the Apple Store, is now 8TB, which is nothing to sneeze at. Each 2TB drive will set you back $550.

Users Experiencing 27-inch iMac Problems

The 27-inch iMac hasn’t been out long, and users are already reporting performance problems with the new model. There are two Apple Discussion Board threads [ one , two ] of users reporting problems with laggy Flash-video playback, a bug that causes the hard drive to spin down, corrupted build of Snow Leopard, and possible bad permissions problems. Apple has yet to validate any of these claims, but if you own a 27-inch iMac and are you’re experiencing with any of these issues, it might be worth a call to AppleCare . Via Engadget

What We Didn’t Get Yesterday

So there were all kinds of new tweaks and price drops and so forth with Apple’s incredibly popular iPod line, but yesterday’s event was more notable for what didn’t happen than what did. First off, despite the popularity of the number nine in the catalog of The Beatles and yesterday’s propitious dating, there were no announcements about the Fab Four’s catalog at long last coming to iTunes. As the remastered CDs hit the brick and mortar stores in the physical form, digital Beatles continues to be elusive despite Yoko Ono’s predictions. Label EMI missed a serious chance to make some coin on the hype and excitement of the re-release paired with The Beatles RockBand game hitting the shelves. Source: AppleInsider Less hot in the rumor loop was a revamp the Apple TV which hasn’t seen an update since 2007. With lagging delivery dates , speculation suggested that the 40GB models were on their way out in favor of a newer model with a larger hard-drive than even the 160GB model. Alas, as the music-related title suggested, the show was strictly iPods and iTunes. While this might have reasonably been a good place for a major refresh of the iPod touch, possibly throwing a camera into the mix, instead we were treated to iTunes 9 which was fitting with the date, but considerably less big news. Which meant of course that Tuesday’s biggest hope — the highly anticipated, incredibly longed for, much dreamed of Tablet — was Wednesday’s biggest tearjerker. It was all music all the time and there was no love for Mac nerds on this front either. There seemed a strong chance when Phil Schiller busted out the games and the game stats, a tablet Mac seeming a good fit for your gaming experience, but no.It was not to be. The event was over. Rumor predictions were batting around 50%, which isn’t unusual, but the biggies didn’t make the cut. Oh well, there’s always next time.

MacBook Pro Owners Experience More Hard Drive Problems

MacBook Pro owners seem to be getting the shaft when it comes to hard drive problems. First it was the noises, which Apple fixed in a recent software update , but that update might have spawned another problem with the 17-inch MacBook Pro. According to 9to5 Mac , many 17-inch MacBook Pro users are unable to upgrade their hard drives to SATA II disks after installing the update. From system crashes, freezes and other problems, people are annoyed that they are unable to upgrade their drives after the update. Some are reporting that the MacBooks don’t recognize third-party drives when attempting to install OS X. The fix? 9to5 reports that some Apple Genius Bar techs are using tools to reinstall a previous firmware version on affected MacBook Pros. It will be interesting to see if Apple will provide another fix for these ongoing hard drive problems.

People with MacBook Pros who opted for the speedier 7200RPM HD customization option can hopefully rest easy today, since Apple yesterday released a software fix to resolve reported problems related to odd noises being made by the drives . It was accompanied by a second update to resolve ongoing Bluetooth quirks. Back in July, users started posting on support forums and message boards about audible clicking and beeping noises being made by the faster, optional 7200RM drives. While the update seems intended to fix these issues, reading Apple’s official blurb, it would seem like resting easy might actually be a tad premature. Apple Support claims that it “reduces certain infrequent noises.” Just “reduces?” We’ll have to wait and see what effect the update actually has, but it doesn’t sound to me like it will provide a total fix. The other update released yesterday affects a wider selection of Mac owners. It’s a Bluetooth firmware update designed to eliminate connectivity issues with Apple-branded peripherals (didn’t 10.5.8 address the same issues? ), including the Mighty Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard. It also includes bug fixes — standard practice for any Apple update. Mac owners who have computers that include Bluetooth on a built-in Broadcom chipset will be prompted to install this update. So far, I’ve installed the Bluetooth update on my Mac mini, and it does indeed appear to lessen the frequency of “Connection Lost” messages related to my Apple Wireless Keyboard. I don’t use a Mighty mouse for reasons of extreme dislike, but if you’ve got one, let us know how performance is affected by the new update, if at all
