Filed under: Gaming , Software , Apple , Developer , iPhone , iPad On the third day of GDC 2010 , Ngmoco’s Neil Young took the stage in one of the largest rooms at the conference to talk about what his company had “unlearned” in its time in the App Store. Ngmoco has become a large and polarizing figure in the world of App Store development — after starting out with a big investment from the iFund, it’s moved quickly to become one of the biggest iPhone-only developers , and after starting out with a few premium titles like the very successful Rolando, have recently made waves with its “freemium” business model . Young talked about the company’s history so far, and went in-depth on Ngmoco’s plan for ruling the App Store and why he believes it’s the “most significant shift and opportunity for [game developers] since the birth of this business.” We’ve summarized Young’s long address in this post. It was pretty incredible — not only did Young lay out his idea of a clear plan for building and developing a large portfolio of very profitable App Store titles “at scale” (the company plans to release twenty new freemium products on the iPhone in the near future, as well as six titles on the iPad ), but he made it very clear that he fervently believes that freemium and the model he’s structured is the future of the video game business. Square-Enix recently brought its popular Final Fantasy series to the iPhone, and now another heavy-hitter, Capcom, is bringing yet another marquee title to the platform. That title is Street Fighter — and Street Fighter IV, a port of the latest installment in the series, is now available for purchase in the App Store for $9.99. But wait, that’s a fighting game. On the iPhone. Which has no physical controls. Sure, there’s been a few to date, with mixed results, but there must be a reason the genre hasn’t caught on with developers with the ferocity of, say, accelerometer-based driving games, no? That’s definitely what I thought, but I purchased and downloaded the game anyway, against my better instincts, because I love the series, notably Street Fighter IV for the PS3. And because when I was considering a purchase, it had only received five-star reviews, which is rare even in the early going for any iPhone game. Luckily, I was not disappointed

I first used Fluid , the site-specific browser creation tool for Mac OS X, a long time ago. But I didn’t find it compelling enough to integrate it into my daily life, in part because virtually all of my digital life still lived on the desktop. As I personally moved more and more to the cloud, it became key. I tend to use Fluid apps for things that I want to have open and at the ready all day. These are things I consider to be more like apps than websites, so having a separate window makes sense, if for no other reason than I can easily command-tab among applications by selecting the appropriate high-resolution logo. With Safari , Chrome and Firefox , I’m in and out of a lot of websites throughout the work day, but most are content sites, or web applications that I use once per week or less. Here are a few of the key ways I’m using Fluid today. Google Calendar I long ago tired of problems with invitations in iCal. There were just too many frustrating examples of invitations not coming through properly or at all, and I invested the maximum amount of time I was willing to solve it. Last year, I also tired of Mail.app’s performance when dealing with many accounts and large numbers of messages. I was using Google Apps for several accounts with IMAP enabled, and using Mail.app as my client.

At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Razer announced a commitment to increase support for Mac users. Razer has a wide variety of peripherals geared directly toward the gaming community, and they committed today to having Mac drivers for all upcoming Razer products. Razer has been a Mac supporter for some time, with a Mac-specific version of their DeathAdder 1800DPI mouse with five independently programmable buttons for a couple of years. They also have Mac drivers for higher-end gaming mice including the Naga MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game–if you didn’t know that, you probably don’t want one) laser mouse with a resolution of 5600DPI and a whopping 17 programmable buttons designed for MMO lovers. It has been a great week for Mac gamers, and hot on the heels of announcements like Valve bringing Steam to the Mac we have assurances of access to high-quality accessories–including a new mouse, keyboard, and headset designed specifically to work well with StarCraft II.
