Half-Life 2 Review

Some things are worth waiting for Almost six years after its release on Windows, the legendary Half-Life 2 has arrived on the Mac thanks to Valve’s Steam digital distribution channel. For newcomers to the series, Half-Life 2 is everything the Mac hasn’t had since the halcyon days of Marathon–it’s a terrific sci-fi/horror first-person shooter with a brain. Set in a dystopian world where humanity has been enslaved by a multidimensional alien race known as the Combine, Half-Life 2 places you in the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist turned unlikely hero who must battle the Combine and work to free humanity from both the Combine itself and the authoritarian human presence that has seized power since the alien invasion. So, you guys are brothers? We can see the resemblance. The game takes a little while to get going–it’ll take about half an hour to obtain your hazardous environment suit and get your hands on the game’s first weapon, the mighty crowbar–but it’s worth the wait. This isn’t your typical first-person shooter. You’ll need to solve puzzles to advance, and at times you’ll be seriously outnumbered and outgunned–moments that require more brains than brawn to survive. Despite Half-Life 2’s age, this giant of a game still impresses. Beautifully rendered models both create stunning landscapes and convey an incredibly claustrophobic world you can’t help but rebel against. The outstanding dialogue draws you into the plot and characters. Those in authority sound like they enjoy their power, the friendly scientists sound lost in their intellectual wanderings, and the rebels gain your sympathy and make you want to fight for their cause.

Editor’s Note: After reading the Google/Verizon Net Neutrality Proposal, we wondered just what would happen if it was actually adopted by the FCC. Below is our best guess. A correspondence from the future. Are you old enough to remember the Internet as it was first imagined? A place of free expression, shared information, and equality of access? If you answered no, then you don’t know what you missed. Up until a little over ten-years ago, paying for internet access meant that you’d get access to, well, the internet. Sure, there were different speeds and data caps to consider, but the information flowed. Americans had such unabated access to information, online gaming, and other media through wired and wireless sources that newspaper empires, television networks and other giants of the media industry shuddered in the presence of the World Wide Web. If you’re old enough to remember that freewheeling time of torrents , WikiLeaks , Hulu and The Pirate Bay , you’ll likely recall hearing something about a deal that caused a media murmur in the spring of 2010: Google and Verizon’s announcement of a suggested course of action to ensure net neutrality. For those too young, or now too senile to recall, Google and Verizon announced that in light of the U.S. government’s failures to legislate regulations to ensure net neutrality across the nation, they’d come up with a few points that they were sure would do the job nicely. Google’s Eric Schmidt and Ivan Seidenberg of Verizon told Americans that they believed–and these are the broad strokes–that everyone in the country should have access to broadband Internet. Schmidt and Seidenberg also stipulated that they felt broadband network technology should be leveraged in order to improve the country’s power management systems and innovate the way that the nation’s healthcare and educational infrastructures are operated. My husband surprised me with an iPad for my birthday, loaded with about 25 apps. However, those apps are now tied to his personal iTunes account on his MacBook, so when I go to sync the iPad with my own MacBook, my iTunes wants to override his apps with the apps that I had previously purchased for my iPhone. I don’t want to do this, so I haven’t synced my iPad yet. Ideally, I would like to merge his apps with my apps. Is there any way? Yes. Any content that your husband purchased through the iTunes Store on his Mac or through the App Store on the iPad—apps, music, TV shows, and movies–can be stored on up to five authorized computers. Those five computers can then sync to any number of iPads or iPhones. Each iTunes account can be authorized on up to five computers.

All it took was a little self teaching in web design, and an inspirational hero in Steve Jobs. Christian – who resides in Corby, Northamptonshire – received his first computer at seven years old. Three years after, he received a Mac and then began to learn some web design. Fast forward four years later in 2008, he started his first company. It’s a site that might be familiar to some called Mac Bundle Box. The site was visually pleasing, almost reminiscent of something Apple might even come up with. On the site, one could purchase a package of various Mac OS X apps for a discounted price and for a limited time. Christian negotiated various deals with developers in order to receive a discount on their apps. While the bundle of apps would normally retail for about $400, he sold it for a mere tenth of the price. To boot, if a large enough amount of users purchased the package, a new app would become unlocked for all buyers. And if that wasn’t enough, Christian also learned the skills of any blooming businessman…philanthropy. He dedicated a percentage of all sales to charity. So, how did the venture work out? In the first two years, the Mac Bundle Box made a cool million (or about 700,000 British Pounds). But why stop there? Owens has now moved on to a new medium, called Branchr, which is a pay-per-click advertising company that sends out 300 million ads a month on well over 17,500 websites, iPhone/Android apps. That company has already made $800,00 in the first year, employs eight adults, and that even includes his mother Alison, 43. While it would seem the sky would be the limit, in the next ten years, Christian’s goal is to make one hundred million British pounds through Branchr. Branchr has even already bought another company, and Christian reinvests all of it right back into the company. So what’s his tip? “There is no magical formula to business, it takes hard work, determination and the drive to do something great.” Indeed. The most difficult part of physical setup is the proper placement of the receiver with your cable or satellite box. The receiver is a bit oddly shaped and often has a hard time staying in place. It is best to tape it in place or put it under the box pointing up. The software end of the install is quick and easy. Even on some older systems, this setup installs quickly and without a hitch. Using the Software: Basics Using the software is on the whole is easy enough. The system is mostly a no-frills affair unless you want to activate the extra features you can. The best thing to do is use your mouse to get what you need done. Working with the remote can be a bit annoying, especially when it keeps landing you at the wrong channel because it accepts imput too slowly. The Best Parts A simple user interface that allows for easy recording. The ability to view live TV as its on without switching your setup on the monitor or HDTV. Recording shows you want to watch later on. The Worst Parts By default, the software will always boot when you turn on your Mac. You can change this so it won’t happen, but a prompt on installation to ask your preference would be welcome. A remote that does not always transmit in real time and seems to have a lower range than the remote that comes with your Mac. No dual recording ability or record and watch another channel. This feature, which is common on many cable company box DVRs would be nice for those of us who live in houses where people have vastly different ideas of what constitutes good TV. Smart Guide & Smart Senses Guide The smart guide allows you to search for shows meeting a specific criteria. If you want to be sure you never miss an episode of the Tudors or any movie musical made after 1985, then this guide can help you to find it without a lot of channel surfing. These features are for hardcore fans. Just be sure to set your parameters carefully or you can end up with unwanted content in your listings. On Screen Menus The on screen menus are touted as a great navigation tool, but really you are better off using the guide window. It requires less steps to get you what you want. iPhone & iPod Recording If you want to watch live TV, look over your recordings, edit, set up a new show or just browse the guide on the go, then the accompanying app is a good idea. Just remember that you will be using up your 3G time if you do not do this in a WiFi zone. Given the costs, it may not be the best use of your iPhone data plan time unless you’re on unlimited. DVD Burning Add Toast to your setup and with a few steps you can burn your content to a DVD and keep it forever. Provided you don’t go and try to use it for illegal sales, you could quietly grow your in home library of films and TV seasons, which could save you some serious cash. The Bottom Line In the end, you are forced to wonder, is the Eye TV worth it? Well, that depends a lot on who you are. If you are the kind of person who really loves your TV, the kind of person who would buy a lot of movies or TV show anyway, then this device maybe worth your time and your money. If, however, TV is not high on your list of priorities in life, then the box will not be that much of a use to you. Casual viewers may want to consider upgrading their already installed box to add DVR features if you don’t have it already. DOJ reportedly expands Apple probe

Filed under: Apple The New York Post is reporting this week that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is expanding its investigation of Apple in regards to iTunes and changes to the beta iPhone OS 4 SDK. As for iTunes, Apple is accused of allegedly threatening to withhold their typical promotional activities from labels who continued to offer exclusives to Amazon via their Daily Deals campaign. Additionally, the DOJ and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are negotiating which of them will launch an inquiry into a clause in the iPhone OS 4 SDK that bans the porting of software originally written for Adobe’s Flash, Sun’s Java or Microsoft’s Silverlight/Mono to the iPhone OS. The Post cites “one Hollywood industry source” in their article, so you’re free to guess who that might be. In the meantime, we’ll follow this story as it develops.
