Head over to hvdesigns to follow along the step-by-step Apple iPad tutorial .  If you’ve got the skills, dust off your old copy of CS2 and get crackin’ on those rumor mills! Think about it–you could concoct some pretty amazing fake iPad shots. Take a minute to strategically place a screenshot of the purported Hulu app (with Flash!), or the Android home screen, or maybe even a command control center of some starship somewhere. If you’re a political activist or just a concerned citizen with something to get off their chest, you’ll be happy to know that there’s finally an app for the common man (and woman) to communicate with the U.S. government. Hello Washington brings to the iPhone and iPod touch the power to have your voice heard in our nation’s capital. "Let your voice be heard! Do you know who your State Senator or Representative is? Do you know how to even get in touch with them? Well, now you can. Hello Washington allows you to do just that," says David Braunstein, President of Smarter Apps, Inc. Among the tasks made simpler by Hello Washington are the ability to look up who your Representative is (and even call or e-mail their office directly from your device), send a snail mail letter, keep up with all of the news coming directly from the nation’s capital, read bios of all of your elected officials and even join forums and create threads. “How many times have you just wanted to write your Representative but didn’t because you didn’t know how to get in touch with them or you simply forgot to write them by the time you got to your destination?” the app description queries. “Hello Washington makes it convenient by allowing you to contact Washington officials with ease, right on the spot!” One of the more interesting features of the app is the ability to follow all of the current bills on Capitol Hill and even see who’s sponsoring them. An app like this ought to create some sleepless nights for the staff of your Senator or Representative, especially with the ongoing debate over hot topics such as health care reform. Of course, it goes without saying that the fact that such an app even exists in the first place shows once again how much freedom we enjoy in the United States. Section: iPod + iTunes , iPod touch , iPhone , iPhone Accessories , iPhone SDK & Apps , Originals It’s the week before the week that’s before Thanksgiving, so I’m sure you’re quite ready for the break from work next week. Of course, just because you aren’t at your day job doesn’t mean you don’t have more work to be done. That’s fine, this week I found a few apps to help, especially if you’re beginning to shop for the holidays. There are a few apps and games to help you find the deals and relax, possibly while waiting in line for said deals. iShootTurkey – Get ready for Thanksgiving by shooting the turkey.  It’s a lot like Duck Hunt, which I’m going to assume you remember, and love as much as I do.  The difference is that you’ll be shooting at turkeys, and they’ll be in 3D!  This looks like casual gaming at its best. iFarm – It’s a virtual farming game.  Patience pays off when you want to live off the land, so grab your plow and start planting. The graphics are cartoony, and you can design your farm the way you’ve always dreamed of. ShopSavvy – Use your iPhone like a mobile barcode scanner.  This app does pretty much everything you could want in relation to barcodes.  After you scan a product, it will find the lowest prices available online or at local retailers.  It will even map them out for you.  Could be useful during the holiday shopping season. TGI Black Friday – Scanning barcodes is great, but this app prepares you for the biggest national holiday we have this time of year, Black Friday.  You can browse leaked ads, search for specific deals and compile a list of items you need.  Just try not to get trampled, okay? Secret Browser – This little app allows you to browse the web without leaving a history trail on your device.  And I know what immediately pops into your mind… this app would be perfect for finding presents to buy all of your closest friends and family.  Because you know, they’re always using your iPhone and checking your browser history and searched-for items.  There’s definitely not a better use of this app.  Definitely not. Pocket Voice Lite – It seems that a musical instrument somehow sneaks its way on to this list nearly every week.  This week is no exception, and this one is as good or as bad as you want it to be.  It’s basically a keyboard that plays a sound that you record at varying pitches.  It comes with a number of predefined sounds, and a few tunes that it will play.  It could be fun to record a ridiculous noise and have it play Fur Elise, or you could actually try to use this for inspiration.  The choice is yours. IDW Comics – For comic lovers everywhere, here’s a great app that let’s you view IDW comics on your iPhone.  Yes, they have all the classics like, Transformers, GI Joe, Star Trek, CSI, even Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Music Box!  I know, you just can’t restrain yourself.  This app isn’t completely free, as it relies on in app purchases, but it does come with 10 free comics, so try it out. But when the rumor is of Apple’s fabled tablet , and the speculation is of a new golden age for comics, the 13-year-old kid in me comes alive. Writing for the Chicago Sun-Times , Andy Ihnatko says there are hints that Apple is getting into the digital comic book market, a statement he likens to saying “Apple is helping to create the digital comic book market.” Digital comics today, he argues, are where digital music was in 2002. Legitimate businesses are so fractured, clumsy, and behind the times that pirated comics (online illegally one day after hitting store shelves) provide the best user experience. Enter LongBox , a company that has made the rounds at comic book conventions this year pitching an iTunes-like store for buying and selling digital comic books. Ihnatko talked with LongBox CEO Rantz Hoseley, peppering him with questions and looking for reasons that LongBox was doomed to failure. What he found instead was a company that respects the comic book as a medium, that has made publishing to the LongBox format (.LBX) as simple as adding a plug-in to the software publishers already use, and that has plans for outfits as big as Marvel or DC all the way down to the lone artists publishing on their own. As we wave goodbye to the week that was, it’s time to take a look at the latest iPhone recommendations from the App Store. This week I’ve been looking at Comics, Coat Hangr, Coins and Album Shuffle. Comics ($0.99) It was released back in June and yet, due to the deluge of apps I deal with on a daily basis, I never quite got to spend time getting into Comixology’s Comics app. Having been hit with a sudden hankering to read some good comics, coinciding with a friend’s recommendation of The Walking Dead series, I decided to spend some quality time with Comics. The app is 99 cents and includes a growing stack of free comics – usually first issues – plus, and here’s the really special thing, you can purchase and download new issues from within the app. The content is utterly fantastic and the interface incredibly accomplished. In fact, it’s easily the best I’ve seen for comic reading on the iPhone. This is absolutely essential for anybody into comic books. Also, if you’re looking to dip your toe in before committing, you can also pick up issue one of The Walking Dead for free as a dedicated app. Coat Hangr (free) Hunting for vintage apparel is one of my favorite pastimes. I regularly visit a multitude of flea markets, on a constant mission to construct the perfect understated retro chic outfit: not too hipster, not too trashy, just right. And yet, once I’ve purchased some new threads, short of wearing them on my wanderings, they’re hidden in the closet. That’s where Coat Hangr comes in, a social fashion app that allows you to share your style with other fashion conscious folk.
