Unlike some of its predecessors, the new AIM 4.0 for iPhone will actually cost you (US$2.99). But unlike its free cousins, the new “iAIM” includes the “Lifestream” function (previously available only on the desktop client), which combines your friends’ activities on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, AIM itself, and a variety of other services. And thanks to AOL’s recent flick of a switch, Lifestream is no longer read-only; status messages posted on AIM can be echoed to Twitter and Facebook. [Available on iTunes ]

Apple Testing Push Notifications Once More With AIM

The big day is only a week away, and it looks like no one is more keenly aware of that fact than Apple. Those enrolled in the iPhone Development Program received an email late today telling them to go and download a developer preview version of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) in order to further test Apple’s push notification servers. Included in the email was a special code redeemable via iTunes. Unlike the AP News app , no specific expiration date is specified for the AIM preview, though the email does state that the app can only be installed on iPhones using the 3.0 GM Seed. Most likely, next week when everyone upgrades to the full, final version of 3.0, this version of AIM will no longer be operational. The beta app doesn’t boast any new feature additions or functionality beyond the push notifications, but they are definitely impressive. Unlike with AP News, when we were basically at the mercy of their schedule in terms of receiving pushed content, it’s fairly easy to engineer a received message in AIM. I tested it out with a number of people, including myself, just to make sure things were running smoothly, and they definitely were. New messages bring up a notification window, with the message and the user name of the sender, and play the AOL chime that has become permanently associated with the AIM brand identity. The app icon is also badged with the number of unread messages, and it does increase if more than one message is received. New messages replace old ones, in terms of the content of the notification window. I can see rapid fire AIM conversations becoming very aggravating unless they introduce some way to customize how you receive consecutive messages from the same user. Potentially annoying or not, this true test of push notification in a more user-controlled setting is very promising. If possible, I’m now more impatient for next Wednesday to arrive, after which point I’ll be relieved for exactly two minutes before I begin anticipating next Friday and the official release of the 3G S

The Incredible Two-Headed Chat Client: AIM for iPhones 2.0 Splits Into Free, Paid Versions

From the “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch Department,” version 2.0 of AOL’s Instant Messenger client for iPhones has been released. Actually, two versions: a free, ad-supported flavor (seen above) is available even as we speak, and a premium edition (rumored to be called “AIM Paid”) is awaiting both App Store approval and a list price. Both versions feature improvements such as location awareness and SMS alerts when you log out. (Note, these are NOT background IM’s, just “You’ve got an IM” notification; you’ll still have to log into AIM to respond to the actual IM.) Other new, non-iPhone-specific features include support for multiple accounts and using AIM to send free SMSes to anyone in your iPhone’s contact list. Is the advert-supported version “worth the price?” A quick scan of recent comments on iTunes would suggest “nay.” Early adapters are complaining, not only of the obtrusive ad popups, but repeated fatal crashes and, when it does work, a crippling lack of a landscape mode. Sounds like a bug fix is in order before anyone starts THINKING about charging for the app… [Available from the App Store ...if you're feeling lucky.]

Free iPhones Offered To Japanese SoftBank Mobile Customers

Japan’s SoftBank Mobile announced on its website that it will be offering a free 8GB Apple iPhone to customers willing to sign a two-year contract tied to one of three promotional plans including basic, premium, or student. For those customers who would prefer the 16GB iPhone, a total price of ¥11,520 ($119.11 US) would be paid in installments of ¥480 ($4.96) per month across the two-year committment. read more

New AIM for Mac & AOL Desktop for Mac

Only two months after going into beta, AOL has released AIM for Mac 1.0 . Unfortunately, not a whole lot has been changed since our review of the beta. There is still no option for video or audio chats, and beyond the addition of AIM Expressions (a library of Buddy sounds, wallpaper and animated Buddy Icons), it’s really no different than iChat. With the more advanced option of Adium for those who find iChat lacking and iChat being built right into OS X, it’s hard to see where AOL is positioning this app. Not to be left out, AOL also updated the native client for their portal, AOL Desktop for Mac , to version 1.5. This update adds a new Parental Controls Assistant that “works with Mac OS X to turn off Internet browsers and other applications and deliver age-appropriate content via the AOL Desktop for Mac browser.” This, however, is a bit more redundancy on AOL’s part as OS X has its own — and much more robust, I might add – parental controls built-in. While it’s good to have options, I can’t help but feel that AOL’s Mac offerings are way too little way too late and I think the appeal only lies within those who have a bit of nostalgia for their dial-up days. If you, however, do decide to venture the “official” route and pick up AIM for Mac, note that to disable its annoying habit of opening the “AIM Dashboard” in your browser every time you sign-on, un-check the “Show AIM start page when I sign in” option under the “General” tabs in settings.
