Since people still seem to want to leave their houses and go to the movies (despite Apple’s best efforts to keep them firmly on their couches), the iTunes Movie Trailers site now features a sophisticated Showtimes view. This HTML5-savvy offering uses location awareness in your browser to show the movies playing nearest you, along with the upcoming screening schedule and links to the theater sites for ticket purchases. The site works great in Safari, Firefox 3 or Chrome on your Mac; it also works perfectly on the iPad, although on the iPhone it’s a little bit compact. A roundup of today’s Apple news

In case you’re just getting off of work, just waking up, or your plane just landed after a 15-hour flight, here’s all of today’s Apple news condensed into one quick post: Steve Jobs looked good at today’s event, which was attended by Steve Wozniak. Steve J. did a nice shout-out to his “partner in crime” at the beginning of the presentation. Jobs announced that there are now 300 Apple Retail Stores in 10 countries, with new stores opening in Spain soon. The Apple Stores get more than 1 million visitors combined on some days — the primary reason why the company dropped their presence at Macworld Expo. Other stats — 120,000,000 iOS devices, 230,000 new iOS activations per day (not including updates), 6.5 billion downloads from the App Store , 250,000 apps on the App Store. iOS 4.1 will be out next week , featuring fixes for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G issues. There will also be support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos, the ability to upload HD video to other devices (Apple TV) over WiFi (this is known as AirPlay), 99¢ TV show rentals, and GameCenter. The latter will bring a new level of interactive gaming to the platform. In November, we’ll see iOS 4.2 for iPad , iPhone and iPod touch . This adds printing support, AirPlay, multi-tasking, and folders (among other features) to the iPad. Not much of a surprise, but nice to have some details: Cult of Mac cites a source close to Apple saying that the live stream of today’s iPod event will be used to put some real-time load on Apple’s new North Carolina data center . The facility isn’t all the way operational quite yet, but it’s apparently ready enough to play a major role in today’s festivities. The NC datacenter is five times the size of Apple’s similar facility on the West Coast and is officially intended to support the iTunes music and app stores . Obviously there’s a lot more horsepower needed for streaming content, so here’s where you’ll find it. As noted last night, today’s live stream is intended for Intel Mac OS X 10.6 users in Safari, iPhone/iPod touch users running iOS 3.1 or higher, and iPad users. Support for the HTTP Live Streaming methodology is included in the current version of the ffmpeg open source library , so in theory apps like Mplayer should be able to handle the stream; VLC may also work. Wall Street Journal confirms iTunes TV show rentals [Update: Netflix on Apple TV claimed by BusinessWeek]

TV shows and iTunes go back several years now, to October 2005. If iTunes TV show sales have not been as brisk over those five years as Apple and the studios might have hoped, perhaps a less expensive rental solution might introduce vigor to the TV market. This afternoon, the Wall Street Journal has confirmed with “people familiar with the matter” that Apple is set to announce $0.99 rentals during tomorrow’s media event. Rumors of iTunes TV rentals have been widespread over the last month . With Hulu Plus waiting on the sidelines for $10/month (and ads, for that matter) and Netflix hyping digital streaming to mobile devices, it seems like a good time for Apple to dip its toes into new and more flexible revenue streams. While Apple is willing, it seems like the studios had to be convinced. WSJ sources say that studio participation in the rental scheme is contingent on broader Apple participation in digital development deals. I know that I have rarely re-watched any of my iTunes purchases — and that most of those purchases were based on pre-Hulu availability after my EyeTV system failed to record shows. But with Hulu as a major player these days, not to mention the promise of Hulu Plus ‘s mobile streaming service, and with a growing recession, will consumers be willing to pay extra just to skip ads?

Rumor: New iPhone 4 handset at the end of September

Honestly, I don’t even believe this one, but it’s our responsibility as an Apple news site to keep you updated on the latest rumors, so here you go: A Mexican tech site is reporting that a Telcel executive says there will be a new version of the iPhone 4′s handset released as soon as the end of September. Marco Quatorze, Telcel’s Director of Value Added Services, says that the iPhone 4 will soon go on sale in Mexico with the same hardware as everywhere else, but that as of September 30th (which is purportedly when the free case deal ends), Apple will be releasing brand new hardware for the phone that will fix the seam in the outer band that causes reception issues. Anyone who’s been paying attention to the issue knows that story’s full of holes — not only does Apple already consider the whole “Antennagate” issue solved, but it’s extremely improbable that they’ll update the hardware so soon and for that reason. It’s much more likely that the company would just extend the free case program rather than update the hardware before the planned cycle. Plus, as we heard from Apple specificially, “Apple has not made an announcement regarding iPhone 4 pricing or availability in Mexico.” Let’s get the phone on sale before we start talking about updates. * It’s possible that this is just an error in translation. If you want to get a little paranoid, we might even guess that Mr. Quatorze is trying to keep Mexican customers from buying another cellphone, hinting that there are better phones coming just around the corner.

With the September 2010 Apple media event just days away, here’s a quick team round-up of our takes on the likely product introductions. Victor Agreda : I’m betting on an iPod nano with touchscreen (because flicking is the new scrolling), and an iPod touch with a camera and retina screen. As for the “One More Thing?” How about a digital shelf in iTunes for your music for MobileMe subscribers? I’m expecting a new iTunes supporting this feature (and more) later this year. Megan Lavey: I’m with the crowd on the iPod nano and iPod touch rumors, but I think if the smaller-form nano is true then the shuffle will be quietly retired. I will go out on a limb and say that if there is no iTV/Apple TV mention this time, it’ll be there in January. I think “One More Thing” will be a cloud-based subscription to iTunes, of which the seeds are already there. Erica Sadun : My money rests on a 4th generation iPod touch and a new nano. I’m expecting the touch to introduce a camera (with FaceTime), retina display, and A4 chip. I’d also like to see iTunes get updated, possibly centered around features arising from the Lala streaming music acquisition. My outlier is an iPad refresh, shipping around November with device options that leverage a newly seeded 4.2 iOS beta. Steve Sande : We’ve seen images of a new iPod nano case and heard rumors of a touchscreen model, so I’m going with that.
