New images showcase potential iPhone 3G 2009 candidate

Section: Apple News , Conferences , WWDC , Rumors , iPhone , iPhone New photos hosted on a Chinese blog appear to show user interface images of the new iPhone that may be announced at WWDC. Although nobody can even say for sure that a new iPhone is coming, it is pretty well accepted that there will be one. The images, although blurry, appear to be legitimate, if you ask me. They showcase some of the features everyone was expecting to be in a new version of the hardware. The image above shows a side by side comparison of the camera on the old iPhone(left) and the rumored camera (right). As you can see, it is much sharper. Furthermore, the image below shows the new CPU Activity screen log. The main image included with this post shows the digital compass that many users were expecting. This could be very helpful with maps such as Google Maps or location based apps. If I had to make a choice, I would say these are real.

Just when you thought the weekend couldn’t get any better, along comes a selection of the freshest picks from the App Store. This week I’ve selected four playful picks for you to toy with over the weekend. It’s not all fun and games, though, as before we get to the apps, I’ve got a roundup of the week’s news. Another week closer to the release of the iPhone 3.0 update means another leaked addition to the new OS. This time, Apple is bringing video purchasing to the iPhone . All well and good, but I can’t imagine how downloading a 2GB movie is going to work over 3G. Our own Nick Santilli procured a selection of apps that raise the potential for photos taken with the iPhone’s camera . It’s essential reading for iPhone owners who are disappointed with the device’s awful camera. My pick of the bunch is QuadCamera — it makes shooting with the iPhone fun again. The iPhone made the front cover of The New Yorker this week, though not in the way you might expect.

TV Or Not TV: iPhone May Be Getting Wireless Video Downloads

From the “Heard It From A Friend Of A Friend Who/This Is Waaaay Unsubstantiated” Department: The latest version of the ad-supported Twitterfon app allegedly popped up a couple of ads which, when selected, pointed to “iTunes Movies,” “iTunes Movie Rentals” and “iTunes TV.” More precisely, to a seeming work-in-progress video section in the mobile iTunes app, from whence the above screen caps come. The only thing that’s really bolstering this rumor right now is the slightly more reputable rumor that next-gen iPhones/iPod Touches will support the higher-speed, lower-power 802.11n Wi-Fi protocol. This would allow faster video downloads than 802.11g Wi-Fi, although the odds of video streaming over 3G without coughing up some extra dough still remain scant. To add fuel to the fire, John Paczkowski at All Things Digital tracked down two URL’s to the nascent iVideo Store — both of which were disabled in record time. [Via AppleInsider ]

New Yorker Cover Boosts “Brushes” Sales

After Jorge Colombo’s iPhone art was featured on the cover of the New Yorker, it seems everyone wants to get their fingers in the pie. The Brushes app Colombo used to finger paint a late-night scene in Manhattan sold 2,700 copies when the cover debuted Monday, earning slightly over $13,000. It usually sells around 60-70 copies a day. “A painting app seemed like a natural fit for the iPhone,” 32-year-old Brushes developer Steve Sprang told the NYT Bits blog . “You’re touching the screen, so it’s a natural step to want to draw on it.” Sprang said the results dwarfed when Brushes was chosen as the app of the day on iTunes and that the app had sold 40,000 copies to date, earning him six figures. All My Mail Searches Multiple Web Mail Accounts at Once

There’s a lot to love about the iPhone, but its ability to manage email is, well, lacking — especially when it comes to search. All My Mail is a new app from Attassa that lets you search across your web-based email accounts, including attachments and contact lists, to quickly find what you need. The standard version to access one email account is free, but for $4.99 users can upgrade to the premium version and access mail and data across multiple accounts, including Gmail, AOL, and Microsoft Outlook (also requires a $19.99 yearly subscription to the Attassa service). All My Mail won’t suck down a lot of juice or cost you a ton of memory because user search requests are sent to, then processed in, the cloud. Results are kicked back in the form of threaded conversations, which makes narrowing down an elusive email really easy. Attachments are also grouped in a single list ordered by date, along with a preview of the messages to which they are attached. The iPhone comes with a great Contact Book, but naturally interfaces with the phone’s calling features. All My Mail will comb through everyone in your email address book to find the name you need, display their contact information, then give you the option of adding the person to your iPhone contact list. All My Mail won’t help manage the deluge of mail that’s weighing down your inbox, but it could come in handy when you need to get your hands on an important email and save the day.
