Wood floors – check White walls – check Employees with T-Shirt and black pants – check Tables in the center with notebooks – check Employees with lanyards – check Ad with tons of app icons on a white background – check They even open the stores the same way. Developer Patrick Giudicelli decided to take the compass on the iPhone and use it to help us figure out who’s bringing weapons to the sales meeting. The Metal Detector ! app is $.99 and is available now. [iTunes link] The app detects ferromagnetic metals like steel and iron using the iPhone’s built-in compass feature. We don’t have any guns at work today–Thursday’s are knife day–but the app did detect the metal in our staplers, wire in-boxes, and random metal external drives. Speaking of knife day, because the knife on my desk is stainless steel, the app couldn’t detect it. Stainless steel is usually an alloy metal that isn’t magnetic. Which means I can continue my stabby ways without fear of detection.

Ever wish the wonderful Exposé feature on the Mac could find its way over to the iPhone? Well, a Swedish design firm did, and they made a video about how it could possibly work. In the video, when you tap the Home button, you’re brought to a screen that features a search bar and the multiple Home Screens on the iPhone. We’d guess that it would work just like Spaces/Exposé on the Mac does in that you could move stuff around and rearrange the Home Screens, etc. While it would be nice to see an on-screen implementation of the iTunes-like Home Screen manager, we would much rather see other important features like the ability to stream live video over the AT&T network without having to connect to Wi-Fi. Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Apple , App Store If you’ve had an app rejected by Apple in the past and it didn’t actually involve nekkid pictures or you think it did not violate App Store policies (yes, realizing those policies can be vague at times), try submitting that app again. It appears to be a season of reconciliation, and it’s time Apple got this right. TechCrunch wrote (a couple of weeks ago) that the developers of the Rising Card app were happily surprised when none other than Phil Schiller intervened on their behalf and got their app approved . Great! We’re hearing similar stories of previously delayed or rejected apps getting a second going-over. So all we need now is a senior VP from Apple to jump in every time there’s a minor discrepancy or some completely foolish misunderstanding of policy and implementation, right? Somehow I doubt this will scale. Phil is no doubt a ball of energy, but he can’t power the entire App Store approval process — which I’m guessing is getting a bit of an overhaul right now, but that’s my guess. For all I know Phil just cloned himself and this will all just go away as Phils 1-99 take care of business. Speaking of business, if you have had an app rejected and Sir Phil hasn’t rode in on his horse to save the day, we want to hear about it in the comments below. Who knows

Up for sale is on eBay is a sketchy-looking, non-functioning white iPhone described as a prototype demo unit of the brand new GS model. The auction has attracted two bids and is currently running at $305, even though the iPhone doesn’t work. The seller says there’s a problem with restoring the software: “This device is not eligible for the requested build,” iTunes says when he tries to restore it. The seller, vofffka, of Ocean City, New Jersey, says an Apple genius at his local retail store verified the iPhone as an Apple product, but can’t service it, “because it’s never been sold.” WTF that means, who knows?
