It sounds like an LSD trip — he says he was awake for four days in a row, plunged into some sort of television screenglow madness, and somehow emerged from this zeroes-and-ones induced frenzy with a cheap way to create color screens (which we presume eventually found its way in the Apple II ). This is why Woz is really the preeminent geek for our times — he’s done some brilliant things with computers, really helped revolutionize the industry, and invented from scratch some of the most amazing things in this already amazing age, and when asked how he did it, he doesn’t credit his own intellect or any personal insight. He says he stayed up for four days, and “sometimes, you’re not sure if it’s going to work because it didn’t follow all of the methodology, all of the science that’s in the books… but in this case it did.” That is quintessential Woz — way before marketing types put together the “Think Different” slogan , this guy was living it. Woz says a lot of interesting things in the video (he runs six navigation systems at a time in his car just for comparison’s sake, and carries two iPhones nowadays, just in case the battery life runs out), but the most intriguing thing about this video is just seeing the great Wozniak thinking machine race along at the speed of Woz. For example, those two iPhones he carries are the two different colors available. Why? “White and black, black and white. Resistor color codes : zero and nine. Armed with ideas, ink pens, and those ever-handy cocktail napkins, Mac|Life ’s tech nerds imagine fauxtotypes of their own. This year we asked other journalists to imagine the future of Apple hardware , but in our January issues from 2008 and 2009, we designed fauxtotypes of our own conception (see here and here ). But even though our friends in the tech community did the heavy lifting for us this month, we couldn’t resist going at least as far as “the cocktail napkin stage” with a number of ideas. In the illustrations below, we present six product concepts that imagine clever simplicity in industrial design. Or at least we hope our ideas reach that quality level–looking at some of these drawings, it appears that a few of us may have had cocktails with our cocktail napkins. Section: iPhone , iPhone , iPhone SDK & Apps Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken about Apple in the past, and not all of the things have been positive. However, in this video from TheStreet.com with James Rogers, he says some positive things about the iPhone. “I am just blown away by how many apps that are so important to my life now.” He also talks about how he carriers multiple cell phones and technology products to see how compaines are thinking compared to what others, for example, Apple are thinking and figure out what’s good and what’s bad. Another insight from Woz was that smartphones can now do almost all the tasks that we do on our computer, something becoming increasingly true with Apple’s App Store.
