Environmentally conscious iPad owners have a nice option for making their own iPad stands, if they haven’t recycled their packaging already. Ian Collins, developer of the NinjaCam app for iPhone and maker of a collection of iPad wallpapers , posted plans for making a stand out of the iPad’s packaging to Flickr on Tuesday. Collins made the stand out of the two rigid recycled paper end pieces that hold the iPad’s box in place inside the packaging by cutting the pieces in half and cutting a slanted notch to hold the iPad. With his design, a total of four stands can be made from the parts. "All you need is a knife (or preferably a small hand-saw) and a few minutes of spare time," Collins wrote in the notes accompanying the image. Collins said the design keeps the home button accessible and includes a built-in recycled logo. The largest version of the instructions is available at Flickr. Via Make Blog

Mac, iPhone, iPod and iPad product news – April 14, 2010

I’m downloading iPhone OS 4.0 right now, and the reason that I’m doing so isn’t the big multitasking feature , which grabbed a lot of attention but won’t actually be implemented until devs start including the features in their apps. I’m doing it for the little things. Little things like Bluetooth Keyboard support and tap to focus for video. And medium-sized things like the introduction of folders. Home screen wallpapers I could actually take or leave, but everything else sounds pretty awesome. Including gloating to my iPad-toting friends when I get the features well before them. iPhone OS 4.0 comes out for the iPhone and iPod touch this summer, as new iterations of the OS generally do. But iPad owners will have to wait until the fall to see the same features implemented on their devices. The operating systems must be fairly different to merit such a gap between the two release dates, although at least a few of the end user-targeted features introduced are iPad originals

We captured some of that information, and list just a few new features here for your reading pleasure: QuickLook: The feature everyone loves in Mac OS X now comes to iPhone and iPad Folder Storage: You can now have up to 2,160 apps on your iPhone through the use of folders Full app access to still and video data iBooks on iPhone: A smaller version of the iBooks app for the iPhone platform. Unified inbox for Mail: At last, all of your emails go can be viewed in one inbox; no more switching between inboxes. You can also have multiple Exchange accounts. The emails can be organized by threads, much in the same way that they are in Mail.app on the Mac. Wireless App Distribution: Companies that create custom in-house apps no longer need to distribute those through a “wired” connection; employees can now install the apps from anywhere, anytime. Homescreen Wallpaper, Bluetooth Keyboards: The iPhone and iPod touch will get these features that are now on the iPad. Fast app switching Background location: Apps can stay updated with location information even when you switch to another app. Selective use of location: Location can be enabled or disabled on an app-by-app basis. Local notifications: like push notification, but not requiring server access. It’s all done on the phone. Task completion: Items that take some time can now complete in background while other work is going on in foreground. For example, uploading an image to Flickr can happen in background while you’re doing something else. iAds: Developers get 60% of the ad revenue by adding interactive iAds to their apps

After the rumor-fest surrounding Apple’s mystery device was stanched the moment Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad, a new trend has emerged; SDK Mining. This is the art of digging through the iPad’s operating system to uncover clues about hitherto-undisclosed functionality. Since the iPad and iPhone SDKs are so very close in core functionality, SDK Miners have been trying to unearth something (anything!) we didn’t already know about the iPad. I suspect most people simply glance over these reports, shrug, and move on without comment. After all, we’re a bit tired of tablet rumors by now, right? But looking at some of the comments in the articles (linked below), there are some people who take it all very seriously indeed. And that’s probably a mistake, as I’ll explain shortly. Before I do, here’s a quick rundown of what we think we know so far from the SDK Mining that has happened in the last five weeks. January 29 Engadget confirmed that the OS SDK contained support for Video Calling, File Downloads, SMS and even Handwriting input; We’re told that there are hooks to accept and decline a video conference, flip a video feed (which suggests a front-facing camera) and — most importantly — run the video call in either full screen mode or in just a portion of the screen. That means you’ll be able to chat and do other things at the same time, which could mean there’s at least some type of multitasking going on here.

Fake workouts.” Says it all, really; Yoga4Dudes: Fully Loaded isn’t so much an app as a collection of videos of attractive women doing Yoga poses in tight, revealing clothing. Taken from the video/show of the same name, Yoga4Dudes gives you 30 minutes of video, extras, and outtakes. The interface is simple enough, you choose a video to watch, and it plays directly from your hard drive, not streamed (which accounts for the app’s 202MB size). There are also model bios, wallpapers, and links to their websites. Beyond the attractiveness of the women (who are very attractive), the videos are professionally produced and well lit with good production values. If you want to get a sample of the videos, there’s a “starter” version of Yoga4Dudes available as a free download. It’s the same size as the full version; you unlock all the videos with an in-app purchase. Watching it reminded me of the old Hill’s Angels routines on The Benny Hill Show ; the production has a sense of humor about itself, making it strangely lighthearted, almost a throwback to a simpler time when the raunchiest thing on television was a show that regularly featured women in stockings and old men getting repeatedly slapped on the head. In fact, it is so relatively tame in today’s world the most surprising thing about the app is that it rated 17+ for frequent/intense sexual content or nudity, and frequent/intense mature/suggestive themes. Okay, fine, whatever, protect the children from women in bikinis, Apple. But if the Stuff4Dudes people are believed, Apple made them remove two videos from the app to be released at all . What do they feature? A man getting an erection. So, according to Apple: It’s okay to sell an app featureing women in skimply clothing while the camera lingers over their bodies so men can look at them
