Macintosh/iPhone software update roundup – October 5th, 2009

The designer of the brilliant “PhotoShoplifter” t-shirt (see the pic after the jump) is back with a new design honoring old Macs. Roger of RubyRed T-shirt Designs has created the “Sad Chimes Rest Home” shirt featuring three vintage machines that are loved but no longer used. “Old Macs deserve more than ending up on the scrapheap after a life of creation and innovation,” Roger says. “Be sympathetic to your old Apple in its time of need, send it to the Sad Chimes Rest Home for retired and redundant Macs. A place where the Mac Classic and the G3 iMac can reminisce about operating system developments.” More of Roger’s work after the jump. Your Old Macs Honored in a New T-Shirt Design

Filed under: Cult of Mac , Apple , Retro Mac Even though reviewers and early attendees have pointed out a slew of Apple references (including a snippet of the 1984 ad ) in the Watchmen film, the one we’ve been waiting for most eagerly is the appearance of Adrian (Ozymandias) Veidt’s sleek black SE/30 . In the film version of 1985, it’s what every ‘world’s smartest man’ is using as his desktop computer. Never mind that in our universe, Apple didn’t introduce the 68030-based compact Mac until 1989 . Looks like Gizmodo has the first photos of the all-in-one running System 6 (naturally). Hey, it’s the consensus best Mac ever — what else would you choose? Also, pay no attention to the fact that while that’s a consistent ADB mouse, the keyboard appears to be for a PC. If you can’t get enough Watchmen, Giz also has a spoilerific discussion of whether one of the characters resembles a certain iCEO , and the iTunes store is chock-full of smiley-face content for your enjoyment. What every superhero needs: Watchmen black SE/30

Section: Apple , Mac + Computers , Discontinued Products , iBook , PowerBook , PowerMac It happens every so often: Apple declares certain older products obsolete or vintage. Vintage machines are those made between five and seven years ago, and obsolete machines are those made more than seven years ago. (Though in terms of support, the two terms really mean the same thing everywhere but in California.) What’s been interesting of late is the amount of Macs on the list that are still in fairly heavy use, and really don’t seem that old. Think the lampshade iMac, PowerBook G4, iBook, and PowerMac G4s. Notice how I just named pretty much every G4 product? Yeah, the G4s are close to being obsolete entirely, and the G5s are next in line. Apple made the transition to Intel chips complete in December 2006, and it’s entire consumer line was Intel In August of ‘06. This means that in August of 2011, Every G5 will be vintage, and Apple will be obligated only to support Intel machines. Of course, we are seeing signs of this already, with it heavily suspected that Snow Leopard is Intel-only, and many features of iLife ‘09 being Intel or Power Mac and iMac G5 limited. You’ve just been vintaged! Apple renders G4 Macs obsolete

Meet Rob Baca. He’s a serious vintage Mac collector, with a total of 75 machines in his possession. He’s also the man who co-directed the documentary Welcome to Macintosh , which counts among its interviewees our very own Leander Kahney. One of Rob’s computers – bought from a friend on the condition that Rob would give it a loving home – is this original 128k Mac. What can you tell us about it, Rob? “This particular machine is one of my favorites and lives in my editing studio alongside a few of my other favorites, a Color Classic and a 20th Anniversary Mac. “Really, it is not used for any heavy lifting or anything, I just show it off like a relic from days gone by. To me it is a piece of history, especially since literally everything it originally came with is in my possession. It is a great talking piece in the editing suite and when I have other people or clients sit in on an edit, it always gets powered on and played with simply for nostalgic reasons and as a comparison of how far the Macintosh (and computing in general) has come in the last 25 years. “It’s only really practical use was as a prop for Welcome to Macintosh in the ‘Macs in Nature’ transition scenes. Even though the machine works and looks perfect, it is fragile because of it’s age… but I still had to bust it out and give it a little face time in the film. I was really nervous hauling it around since it is so old and the wrong move might render it a brick. But everything worked out wonderfully.

25 Years Of Mac: Rob Baca’s 128k Mac

For those of you who remember the good old days of the Error Bomb and the SE-30, you may remember the old Broderbund game Shufflepuck Café . You were thrust into rough and tumble space bar, clearly the outsider, forced to prove yourself in a true game of wits and agility: computer air hockey. It was a simple game for simple times: a handful of wacky alien characters, mild nudity, and an animated screen crack when your opponent scored. Ah to go back for one more round. But you’d need a vintage Mac for that, and you threw yours out with your velour leisure suit years ago. Fret not! There are a few free possibilities for a quick match on OS X! None line up perfectly with the original, and for that I am exploring the avenues of emulation, but in a pinch these will do. TuxPuck is perhaps the most reminiscent of the original, with a character closely resembling Princess Bejin. It is, however, limited in the characters you can play against and might need a bit of massaging to get it to play. Shufflepuck REVOLUTION provides a bit more variety in the way of characters, including Woz and Jobs as opponents, but it’s also updated the system with 3D graphics. Unlike TuxPuck, Shufflepuck REVOLUTION insists on playing in fullscreen, which is a bit off-putting if you don’t know that right away.
