Some things are worth waiting for   Almost six years after its release on Windows, the legendary Half-Life 2 has arrived on the Mac thanks to Valve’s Steam digital distribution channel. For newcomers to the series, Half-Life 2 is everything the Mac hasn’t had since the halcyon days of Marathon–it’s a terrific sci-fi/horror first-person shooter with a brain. Set in a dystopian world where humanity has been enslaved by a multidimensional alien race known as the Combine, Half-Life 2 places you in the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist turned unlikely hero who must battle the Combine and work to free humanity from both the Combine itself and the authoritarian human presence that has seized power since the alien invasion. So, you guys are brothers? We can see the resemblance. The game takes a little while to get going–it’ll take about half an hour to obtain your hazardous environment suit and get your hands on the game’s first weapon, the mighty crowbar–but it’s worth the wait. This isn’t your typical first-person shooter. You’ll need to solve puzzles to advance, and at times you’ll be seriously outnumbered and outgunned–moments that require more brains than brawn to survive. Despite Half-Life 2’s age, this giant of a game still impresses. Beautifully rendered models both create stunning landscapes and convey an incredibly claustrophobic world you can’t help but rebel against. The outstanding dialogue draws you into the plot and characters. Those in authority sound like they enjoy their power, the friendly scientists sound lost in their intellectual wanderings, and the rebels gain your sympathy and make you want to fight for their cause.

Half-Life 2 Review

It could be nothing, but it certainly might be something: If you make your iTunes applications and media purchases with a credit card or a PayPal account, you’d do well to take a moment and read this story and take a few precautions to ensure your financial well-being. A number of of users who utilize their credit card or Paypal to purchase goods from the iTunes Store have reported massive unauthorized purchases of software , music and videos using their iTunes Store account. Reports of the amounts taken from the various users differ, with some seeing purchases in the hundreds of dollars, to thousands. One unfortunate individual reported that his entire bank account was drained via PayPal in the name of someone else getting their entertainment and productivity on. At this point, there is no information available as to how the hackers who have hijacked the accounts had come by the username and password information required to exploit the account holder’s resources. Until a cause–or a solution–to the issue has been announced, we suggest that that if you must make purchases via iTunes, you consider disassociating your Paypal account and credit cards from the service and pay for your transactions through the use of giftcards. While none of the tales of hacked accounts have been confirmed at this point by Apple, in a summer of unfortunate security breaches , this could well be the icing on the cake.

Not only is the AR.Drone a mind-blowingly cool toy and efficient way of making nerdy new friends at the park, its support for augmented reality gaming could really help it take off (ooh! pun!) if developers jump on the open platform. At press time, no games were ready, except the built-in “Drone Wars” which requires two copters, one more than we had. But the potential for awesomeness is clear. The Drone is about the size of a large pizza and weighs less than a pound. But its tech is fierce: two cameras, a three-axis accelerometer, two gryometers, an ultrasound sensor, a tiny computer system with an ARM9 processor and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and four rotors spinning at 35,000 rpm

There were light fingers this week; there was at least one snowy white iPhone 4 in the Great White North; there were apps galore; emails from Steve; more incredible impossible hard-to-credit stuff from Piper Jaffray, which seems to specialize in pixie dust and random guessing; and there was Google and Verizon, trying to make us hate them more than we hate AT&T. Oh yeah, there was also Mac|Life, where all of this makes sense. Features: – The Google / Verizon Net Neutrality Pact – 10 Years in the Future – We’re big fans of an open Internet and the freeflow of information and entertainment. There are parties, media conglorporations mostly, who aren’t quite so thrilled and who would like to see limitations on the other guy’s traffic and a zippier download time for their content. Apple allows you to do that simply and legally, as long as both computers are on the same network. This gets around the rather silly restriction of allowing an iPhone/iPod touch to only sync apps with one computer. Home Sharing is an iTunes feature that Apple doesn’t make a lot of noise about, which is odd because it makes it simple to sync and transfer purchases between computers on the same network. Movies, TV shows, music, and yes, even apps can easily—and legally—be swapped between up to five computers, so if you’re in the living room and suddenly realize the song you want to hear is in the bedroom, or if you want to share an app with a family member who’s iPhone is synched to another computer, Home Sharing is the answer. First, you need two computers on the same network with iTunes open. Then, if it’s not already active, go to Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing in the menu bar.
