With the September 2010 Apple media event just days away, here’s a quick team round-up of our takes on the likely product introductions. Victor Agreda : I’m betting on an iPod nano with touchscreen (because flicking is the new scrolling), and an iPod touch with a camera and retina screen. As for the “One More Thing?” How about a digital shelf in iTunes for your music for MobileMe subscribers? I’m expecting a new iTunes supporting this feature (and more) later this year. Megan Lavey: I’m with the crowd on the iPod nano and iPod touch rumors, but I think if the smaller-form nano is true then the shuffle will be quietly retired. I will go out on a limb and say that if there is no iTV/Apple TV mention this time, it’ll be there in January. I think “One More Thing” will be a cloud-based subscription to iTunes, of which the seeds are already there. Erica Sadun : My money rests on a 4th generation iPod touch and a new nano. I’m expecting the touch to introduce a camera (with FaceTime), retina display, and A4 chip. I’d also like to see iTunes get updated, possibly centered around features arising from the Lala streaming music acquisition. My outlier is an iPad refresh, shipping around November with device options that leverage a newly seeded 4.2 iOS beta. Steve Sande : We’ve seen images of a new iPod nano case and heard rumors of a touchscreen model, so I’m going with that. iPhone 4 Catches Fire and Burns Owners Hand

An iPhone 4 owner recently discovered an undocumented feature of the new device: it can apparently burst into flames and burn your hand. Later on, the owner of the charred device took it to the AT&T store, where the remains of the device were photographed. Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 4 in question had a faulty USB port that caught fire when the owner connected it to their computer. This situation is not dissimilar from the iPod nanos that were catching fire a few years back (that was due to the type of battery used in the device); in that situation, Apple did issue a recall . This is the first reported case of an iPhone 4 catching fire, and we hope it will be the last. Apple has not released any statements regarding this situation. It is believed that this is not a widespread problem, but rather just a one time incident. HyperMac refreshes external batteries with iPad support

The new batteries support charging of the iPad with a higher powered USB port than previous models. And just to make the update that much sweeter, they’ll start shipping in two weeks at a price tag $30 lower than before. HyperMac is known for their external batteries. They have batteries for iDevices just like everyone else, but they are the only company making batteries for MacBooks . They’re now updating the MacBook external batteries to support the new power requirements of the iPad. That makes them the first to market with an external battery for iPad. The iPad requires a 10W USB port, which is more than usual. If you plug an iPad into any regular USB port (including any of the current line of HyperMac batteries) you’ll immediately discover that it won’t charge as expected. In actuality, it just won’t charge while the screen is on. With the screen off, it will charge very slowly. It’s better than nothing, but obviously not good enough for the HyperMac battery going forward.

Innovation entails providing solutions that are not just new, but meet needs or solve problems in a better way than what came before. Here’s some news for you Ma Bell; people’s communication needs are changing. On behalf of a burgeoning generation of users who find themselves largely without need of landlines, I would like to call on AT&T to do some rethinking. Here’s the idea: Hang Up and Let it Go Many people realize one of Steve Jobs’ most brilliant accomplishments is the way he embraces change. Change, unfortunately, often involves some destructive force, like sentencing the floppy disk drive to the dustbin of history, or letting go of the still lucrative iPod mini to usher in the flash-based iPod nano. AT&T stands to let something old pass on as well: its obsession with the telephone. AT&T makes good money by selling a voice package to everybody with a cell phone, but what nobody seems to realize is that smartphone users (iPhone users in particular) really do not need voice packages. I hear the clamoring now: what about the “phone” in smartphone, eh? Here’s news; we really do not need telephone service on our smart phones. The forthcoming iPhone OS 4.0 will allow Skype (or, hopefully, a Google Voice app) to run a VoIP manager in the background. That means you don’t need a physical cell phone…all you need is a device capable of running a VoIP client. Enough people have made the switch away from landlines to cell phones, but we are still tied to individual pieces of hardware. Let my phone calls go! Share the Love Dear AT&T: Sell data access plans for multiple devices. I do not want to buy multiple data packages; let me have one account with unlimited data to share across my iPhone, iPad, and maybe even iPod touch in some Statbucks WiFi hotspots. I doubt I will ever be using all three at once, so buying three unlimited data packages seems superfluous. Plain and simple. Growth Opportunities Simple fact: Contract subscribers pay more than pay-as-you-go subscribers, and cell phone companies are used to the steady and lucrative revenue streams from text messaging charges, overage charges, etc. But today’s users are about data: consuming it, creating it, and not worrying about whether or not there is enough bandwidth to move a video/picture/sms from one place to another. Even phone calls today are treated as data, though voice calls consume a good deal more network resources than regular data packets (due to the constant connection required between the cell tower and device). AT&T has some opportunity to maximize data flow on its network by letting iPhone users Skype their way through voice calls rather than talk. As long as my calls can be routed to whatever device I’m currently using, I will never miss having a phone. Realize, AT&T, that you are no longer a company providing telephone service. You are, rather, selling data access, and currently doing rather a poor job at delivering

While CoverScout searched for album art (natch), SongGenie 2 is the other half of finding missing song info—and to my mind the more important—identifying the title, artist, and album, and also searching for lyrics, in case you need to use your iPod as an impromptu karaoke machine. Like CS, you select the song (or group of songs), tell it to identify, and off it goes onto the internet to find the missing info. Nine times out of ten, it worked flawlessly. Obviously, the more information it has to work with, the easier it is to find the missing data. In a few cases, SG even replaced incorrect information—like the mix playlist I titled as all coming from one album—but for the most part it only deals with blank data or things that are obviously computer filenames. There were a few oddities, however, when identifying a group of songs that came from one album. On certain tracks, it would correctly ID the album; on others it would suggest they came from a greatest hits or compilation track. On Quiet Riot’s “Cum on Feel the Noize,” it decided the song was performed by “Various Artists.” These oddities, however, were few and far between. It was also unable to identify and retitle the more obscure songs and radio shows in my library, but I expected that…though it would be nice to think that somewhere out there an audiophile had taken the trouble to enter Phil Harris’s “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens” into a database of lyrics. If you want to check the search results against the song itself, SG includes a helpful button that will play the file. If you have a lot of music, CoverScout 3 and SongGenie 2 take a lot of the repetition out of finding song info, automating the searching, copying, and pasting. You’ll need to spend just a little time making sure the results are perfect, but if you care enough about your music to use this program, you’re going to do that, anyway

However, what may be more interesting is what the iFixIt team found inside of the iPad. For instance, the iPad has two battery packs wired in parallel that hold 5.5 times the capacity of the iPhone. Furthermore, perhaps the most interesting information from this teardown comes from what iFixIt found out about Apple’s A4 processor. After finding outside help to X-ray the chip, iFixIt found that it contains two stacked Samsung dies as well as two layers of RAM which add up to the same 256MB as in the iPod 3GS. They have said that they’ll be releasing more information about this soon. Lastly, a slow within the frame that was previously thought to be left for an eventual camera has been confirmed to now contain an ambient light sensor. My first Apple device was an iPod Nano, second-gen, and using it was a revelation; the simplicity of the click-wheel and the solid industrial design wowed me. My second Apple device was an iPod touch, also a second-gen and also a revelation; interacting with a touchscreen was completely new to me, and iPhone OS was a dream to use. After owning those two, I got interested in OS X. I learned everything I could about Macs, watched every video I could find, and played with the Macs at the local Haddock store (Wichita doesn’t have an Apple store yet). I wanted to use OS X, so much so that I couldn’t wait to scrounge up the money to buy a Mac; I had to use it now. And so I hackintosh’d my crappy Dell Inspiron 1525 using a guide I found on DailyBlogged.com . Later, I’d end up writing for DailyBlogged, posting how-tos and opinion pieces. Using a hackintosh was OK, but I still wanted a real Mac.

Charge Your New iPod with Old iPod Chargers

I paid good money a couple of years ago to have an iPod-compatible car stereo installed, but it was worth it. My fifth-gen iPod stays charged all the time, and I don’t have CDs all over my car anymore. But then I got a new iPod nano, and when I connect it to the cable, I can play music, but it won’t charge the iPod. What’s up with that? The most likely problem is the voltage the iPod is getting. Older iPods (fifth-gen and earlier) can charge on either the FireWire spec (3.5 volts) or the USB spec (5 volts). But new iPods need that 5-volt charge. Luckily, Scosche sells a handy little widget that can convert the voltage, so both old and new iPods will charge just fine. The IFWA Charging Adapter ($29.99, www.scosche.com ) has a pass-through port, so you plug your car’s cable into one end and your iPod nano into the other. If you have any dock-equipped speakers in your house that won’t charge new iPods, Scosche’s IFWAH Charging Adapter for Home Docks ($39.99, pictured below) has a dock-shaped fit that will prop your iPod up better than the rectangular IFWA. This little gizmo is all that stands between your iPod accessories and your power-hungry iPod.

When you first launch the application, you are presented with an extremely simple window that tells you to insert the DVD you plan on ripping. Once you do, RipIt allows you to change the name of the rip and then you simply start the process. From this point until the finish, the application will look much like the image below.
