OnLive Cloud Gaming Service Available Tonight For Mac Users

Filed under: Apple I tend to be a pretty light data user. As the chart here shows, my monthly data consumption rarely exceeds the 200 MB mark. After all the events of this week , with AT&T announcing its new, and quite limited, data plans I decided to hop over to my iPhone account page and see how I was doing in terms of overall consumption. What I discovered over there shocked me. After month after month of limited data use, my June numbers (actually starting May 23rd) were through the roof; about 3GB to date. It didn’t take me long to figure out why: it’s because for the last few weeks my teenage daughter and I have been stopping by Starbucks in the evening. I play my Mother’s Day gift of Field Runners on the iPad while my daughter has been surfing the ‘net on the iPhone. We chat, we zone, we compute

Rhapsody users rejoice! The music streaming service is offering their users the ability to download playlists to their iPhone for offline listening. Can flying cars be far behind? Yes–sadly, we’re still decades away from viable personal airborne transportation, but at the very least you can listen to tunes from Rhapsody on your iPhone even when there’s no internet connection available. According to AppleInsider , the latest update of Rhapsody’s iPhone application allows the streaming service’s subscribers to download playlists to their iPod touch, iPad or iPhone via WiFi or 3G. However, it does require that a monthly subscription fee. Now if that’s not some good news to start the week off with, I don’t know what is.

Via Apple 2.0 , online advertising network Chitika now estimates that more than 600,000 iPads have been sold, doubling first day sales as reported by Apple on Monday. If this rate continues, Apple will likely sell its millionth iPad before both the international and 3G iPad launch. That’s good news, both for current iPad owners, and for the future of the platform. Chitka Research bases their estimates on the number of iPads seen coming through the Chitika ad network multiplied by “how much of the Internet we see at any given time.” Chitika serves some two billion monthly impressions over 80,000 websites. Chitika may even be conservative in their estimates. On the day Apple announced 300,000 iPads sold, Chitika estimated 270,000. As to where those iPads were sold, not surprisingly the largest states have seen the greatest sales, with California, Texas, New York, and Florida accounting for more than 20, 8, 8, and 6 percent respectively.

Just when you thought the iPad might be able to breathe some life back into the failing print industry, the industry itself seems dead set on making sure that doesn’t happen. Well, certain parties within the industry at least, like maybe News Corp. for instance, if a recent report appearing in the Wall Street Journal about planned iPad subscription pricing is any indication. The report, which, you’ll remember, appeared in the WSJ itself, cited “a person familiar with the matter” as the source of the information that the Journal would be charging $17.99 per month for iPad subscribers when the device launches next month. No, that’s not a typo where I accidentally switched “per month” for “per year.” I realize that the Wall Street Journal is among those choice few who’ve been given a pre-production piece of iPad hardware upon which to develop its app, but I doubt very much that anything it can put together, no matter how spectacular, will make me want to pay $18 a month for the privilege of using it. People switched to online news sources because they were cheaper, not significantly more expensive than traditional paper outlets. While the WSJ seems to have gone well off its rocker regarding iPad pricing, other companies are offering more sane and reasonable deals. Esquire, for instance, which is the magazine the furthest along in the Hearst family with regards to iPad development, plans to offer its iPad issues for only $2.99 an issue. That’s $2 off the standard newsstand price, which is cheaper, as one might expect. Men’s Health, on the other hand, is going the route of equally priced digital and print editions, and will be charging $4.99 per issue, and other offerings like Time and People are said to be priced close to the newsstand editions. Advertisers are reportedly flocking to the magazine publishers in droves in order to be part of the first wave of iPad editions, owing partly to the marquee value of the highly anticipated launch, and partly to the innovation in interactive ads possible thanks to the new medium. For those of you who are just unimpressed with sub-4G speeds on your iPhones (or those who do not wish to upgrade to a new device), consider the Sierra Wireless Overdrive 4G WiFi hotspot by Sprint. Though coverage is not the best at the moment, Sprint continues to make inroads in expanding its network and the device is an interesting alternative to those who are frustrated with AT&T’s congested network. Basically, this is a mobile router that taps into Sprint’s network and creates a local Wi-Fi hotspot for your device, thereby surpassing the technical limitations of the 3G chipset (or lack there of if you happen to have an older iPhone). The tradeoff is that you would still need an AT&T plan for phone features as the Wi-Fi merely supplements the data side. It’s also pricey, weighing in at $99.99 after $250 in discounts and rebates. The monthly plan at $59.99 per month includes unlimited 4G usage (with an ever increasing network) and 3G coverage at 5GB per month. It’s also interesting to note that Sprint’s iteration of 4G is based on WiMax, which translates to a peak download speed of 10 megabits per second and an average speed of 3-6 megabits per second. The great news is that this technology is also compatible with the iPad. Though it’s still a $30 premium over AT&T’s unlimited data plan (theirs at $29.99 a month), the speed difference may be of enough value to users. The Overdrive Mobile Hotspot also supports up to five simultaneous users, providing additional benefit and potential cost savings to users with multiple devices.
