iPhone and iPod touch apps to take on the camping trip

In the wake of the tsunami of iPad related rumors and news both before and after it was unveiled in late January, new rumors about the next iPhone have been scarce by comparison. But that may be about to change, with various sources reporting that multitasking will finally come to the iPhone with the next major software update. AppleInsider is reporting that “people with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances” have leaked some significant details that point to a “full-on solution” to multitasking on iPhone OS 4.0. With competitors like Palm’s WebOS and Google’s Android flaunting their multitasking in recent hardware, it was probably only a matter of time before Apple figured out a solution for the iPhone. If the reports are true, it would silence once and for all the one major criticism of the device at long last. Apple introduced push notifications with iPhone OS 3.0 to stem some of the complaints, but ultimately that solution only made things more complicated, since the software is only capable of displaying one notification at a time, which limits its usefulness. Of course, since iPhone OS has its roots in Mac OS X to begin with, you wouldn’t think that multitasking should have taken Apple four generations to figure out in the first place. The current iPhone OS 3.x software is a “fully preemptive multitasking operating system, but it artificially restricts apps (other than specific ones bundled with the system by Apple) from running in the background” — for instance, the ability to leave the Phone app during a call while entering another app such as Maps, or playing music via the iPod app while reading e-mail or browsing the web. Multitasking on the iPhone is not a technical problem, but rather one of battery life and the ability to optimize resources, which Apple has not been shy about stating publicly. Jailbreak users already have the ability to install software via Cydia or Rock Your Phone which will allow multitasking on the device as well. If it’s true that Apple will introduce multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0 — presumably with a new hardware model in June as they’ve done for the last three years — the only challenge will be how to implement it in a user-friendly way without consuming further battery resources. Sure, that’s the main purpose, but probably not the reason anyone is buying this app.  It’s all about the $1,000,000 they have on the line at the Oscars.  That’s right, if you’ve seen enough movies over the past year, or maybe if you’re just lucky enough to guess all of the official Oscar winners in all categories correctly, you could win a cool million.  Actually, it’s a $1M annuity paid over 50 years, which is worth significantly less than $1M.  And just to bring it down a bit, should more than one person predict all winners successfully, the winnings are split between all correct entries. Beyond the “prize,” The Red Carpet is all about movie ratings.  You can choose how you’d like to sort your ratings by “Categories,” “Movies to Rate” and “All Nominated Movies.”  Categories will group the nominees based on, you guessed it, categories, like Actor in a Leading Role, Art Direction etc.  You can also choose to rate all movies at once, or just the ones you haven’t already rated.  Rating movies/nominees is simple, though it requires too many taps. First the sorting method, then the movie, then the rating button, then the rating field, then the actual rating. That’s at least 5 taps to rate your first movie

Considering the touch screen of the iPhone and iPod Touch, it can be even more fun to drag and touch your images and edits than to use a computer and mouse (although the Mac certainly offers far more powerful software). Until then, developers have certainly come up with some interesting ideas and concepts for the iPhone. Each category has a nice amount of images from which to choose, which is good. Furthermore, every image has a location where text is to be displayed in one way or another (whether it be in lights, in snow, on an object, etc). Once you decide on an image to use, you then choose the text you want to place inside of that image

Do you know how to even get in touch with them? Well, now you can. Hello Washington allows you to do just that," says David Braunstein, President of Smarter Apps, Inc. Among the tasks made simpler by Hello Washington are the ability to look up who your Representative is (and even call or e-mail their office directly from your device), send a snail mail letter, keep up with all of the news coming directly from the nation’s capital, read bios of all of your elected officials and even join forums and create threads. “How many times have you just wanted to write your Representative but didn’t because you didn’t know how to get in touch with them or you simply forgot to write them by the time you got to your destination?” the app description queries. “Hello Washington makes it convenient by allowing you to contact Washington officials with ease, right on the spot!” One of the more interesting features of the app is the ability to follow all of the current bills on Capitol Hill and even see who’s sponsoring them. Of course, it goes without saying that the fact that such an app even exists in the first place shows once again how much freedom we enjoy in the United States. With the help of Doc2, you can turn your phone into a mobile productivity center.  Doc2 affords you a wide range of ways to use and manipulate your data so you can do what you need without a computer. You can store them in a custom folder, which is handy when you need to keep things organized by sender or project. As for from where you get your documents, a wide variety of options are available for importing.  You can get your docs from your Google Docs account, an iDisk or a WebDAV. You can also see a wide variety of information about files such as their size and extension type.  That may be a very good thing to turn on.  From a security point of view, knowing your extension type can save you from getting an unpleasant malicious code download. Formatting/editing and file creation are simple enough, including the ability to insert images and tables. But just in case you get lost there are a wide variety of tutorials that can help you past the learning curve. Just be aware that you need web access (WiFi or a 3G connection) to have access to the help file. Hooking into your Google Docs is as simple as putting in your user name and password. All of your organizational structures will still be there. Just be aware that any files that are not filed will be settled on the bottom of the listing. Everyone loves a software update, especially when it bulks up with new features that users are clamoring for. Such is the case with the popular ReaddleDocs for the iPhone and iPod touch, which just got a refresh to 2.1 — and a host of new features to boot. ReaddleDocs was one of the earliest iPhone apps to manage documents, view files and save attachments, which went a long way toward making the device a lot more usable, especially to business users. Among its tricks are the ability to read Microsoft Office documents, save e-mail attachments, read books on the go with its fantastic PDF reader and to share files with your friends. Following closely on the heels of the recent (and extensive) 2.0 update, ReaddleDocs 2.1 adds a handful of new and very welcome features.
