Section: iPhone + Communications , iPhone Ringing in the new year is the iPhone Dev Team, who have just made available their iPhone 3G unlock software, entitled “yellowsn0w.“ Contradicting their previous blog posts, however, is the fact that this only runs on the 2.2 firmware, whereas the Dev Team had stated the unlock would not work on this version of the firmware. Additionally, the Dev Team has dubbed the software as version 0.9.1, citing its beta stage of development—only use it if you really are sure of what you’re doing. Price: $1.99 I’m not sure who these MunkyFun people are and why they’re here, but if I ever run into them, I’m going to have two things to say. 1.) Monkeys get too much airtime. I don’t know if it’s because people think they’re cute animals or if the word “monkey” is just fun to say, but can we please start passing some of that love onto the jackalope or the platypus, both of which are equally fun to say? 2.) You’ve created the perfect iPhone game. Now, but let me qualify that. Ivory Tiles is not for everyone. It’s a puzzle game. I know that turns a lot of people off, and that’s fine. But as far as puzzle games go—and when it comes to use of the iPhone/iPod touch’s accelerometer—Ivory Tiles is the best I’ve seen yet. The point of Ivory Tiles is to slide any number of (get this) ivory tiles onto certain squares on the game board.

Of course I did. I was in grade school when the series launched, so I was there at the right time. And although I used to own quite a few of them, I have no idea where they ended up. The attic at my parents’ house? A garage sale? Donated to a fund raiser? I’d like to have them back, because I think they’d be fun to read to my own kids now. Assuming that’ll never happen, I guess my iPhone will suffice. Magnetism Studios has released the Return to Atlantis Choose Your Own Adventure book for the iPhone, and they’ve done so faithfully. The original cover remains. The illustrations remain. Even the “This book is different from other books” warning remains.

Like any good reporter would, I went to the developer’s website before I downloaded the game. Guess what? Under construction…almost like the website is hosted by a 17 year old hacker in their room under their bed. Creepy and eerily plain. So my first impression was that I would probably not download this game if I was not doing a review. As for the game? It just flat out sucks. I really don’t know where to start on this one, so I guess we will start at the beginning. The instructions tell you to find and relocate match sticks to make the mathematical equation true. Your score’s dependent upon your speed and the amount of moves you make to solve the puzzle. Each puzzle has a maximum score that counts down as you work the puzzle. There are a set number of moves to solve each puzzle, and each time you make an extra move, you have points taken away. The game also has three themes available to change the look of the match sticks and the color of the screen

The chief difference between the three is that Pro is a one time purchase (free updates yearly), Plus is valid for two years (current edition is good through 2010) and the basic version has no database updates; what you buy is what you get.  The app’s UI is straightforward.
