MacNN today reported that the U.S. Patent Office has published a patent application from Apple, describing a proximity-based social networking tool. The plan appears to be the ability for people in the same general area (as defined by the span of a WiFi network or Bluetooth connection) to spontaneously form groups and exchange information. The actual text of the patent describes a "trusted service" that tracks time and location info from wireless-enabled devices and invites users in close proximity to virtually connect. The images included were based on the iPhone or iPod touch. It also looks as if sharing your calendar, address book, email, and text messages with other members of a group is as easy as a touch of a button. Part of the description reads, "During private or public events (e.g., concert, tradeshows, business meetings, weddings, rallies), a typical individual may have many brief contacts with individuals for which they would like to have further correspondence post event." In other words, you can easily (and hopefully, only voluntarily) swap contact info and more with others in your general vicinity. So, who is this trusted service that keeps track of where you were, when you were there, and who you were with

iGroups patent suggests Apple is looking at social networking

Filed under: Apple A new Apple patent is going around that offers up something called “iGroups” functionality — it seems to be a kind of location-based social networking, including an ad-hoc currency functionality between a crowd of Apple devices. It’s pretty interesting , though it sounds more like an idea Apple is playing with than an actual service they’re going to debut. They specifically mention rock concerts and tradeshows (including WWDC), with the plan that someone would start up a “group,” and then individual group members in the same location (determined by GPS) would be able to hook into that group and/or exchange contact info or “tokens” with other members of the same group. Not quite a Foursquare or Facebook competitor (this definitely seems like a much more local service), but a new kind of ad-hoc network based on the idea that everyone in the area who is using an Apple device can connect up in new ways. The “token” idea is interesting, too — it adds a gaming element to the situation that seems very un-Apple. That, more than anything else, is what makes me think this is Apple just covering their bases rather than securing an idea that they plan to put into action. Still, a lot of Apple’s services ( MobileMe , iWork , and so on) tend to be more traditional rather than innovative — they innovate on hardware and often play catch-up on software — they do it well, of course, but their specialty is polish, not necessarily. Diving into a newer arena like social networking would be an interesting move for Apple. iGroups patent suggests Apple is looking at social networking originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 16:30:00 EST. 9to5Mac reports that Wired magazine showed off the tablet version of their magazine at SXSW , and dropped hints of an iPhone version soon to come. It’s a whole lot more than a screen version of a print product! Wired simply ported over their entire March issue into tablet form. Swiping horizontally acts a bit like a table of contents, taking you through the ads and the first pages of sections and stories. Scrolling vertically lets you scan through the whole content of longer stories. The app is very sensitive to orientation, with different images being displayed for an article based on whether the device was tilted in portrait or landscape mode. See about 3:30 into the video below for an example. A tap brings up a scrubber that lets you scroll through the magazine, seeing thumbnails–perfect for those who tend to riffle through publications. Some articles included tap links, bringing up additional information at a touch

PayPal Revamps App With "Bump" Feature

The money transfer company made infamous by eBay has revamped their app to allow money transfers to happen easier than ever, by adding the "bump" technology feature according to InformationWeek . The feature in Version 2.0 of the Send Money app allows users to move funds quickly between PayPal accounts just by putting the two phones together.  The app also includes a split feature that lets users divide and reimburse each other for the cost of a meal, including tax and tip for up to 20 people. Then there is also a third feature named Collect Money, which lets a person request money from multiple people for collective purchases, like gifts from a group.  Additionally, gifts of money can also be sent immediately. PayPal mobile transactions jumped dramatically in 2009, up to $141 million in 2009 from $25 million in 2008, according to PayPal.  ABI Research predicted that $119 billion will be spent by consumers via their mobile phones through 2015. "PayPal Send Money lets consumers access their wallets through their phones," said Osama Bedier, PayPal VP of platform and emerging technology.  "Because with PayPal, the wallet lives in the cloud — the mobile phone is just one device customers can use to access it." Some other various features of the app include the capability to set up reminders for recurring payments and the ability to manage PayPal accounts.  For international exchanges, the app also includes a global currency calendar as well as 15 languages. The app does require a PayPal membership as well as a PIN or password for every transaction in an effort to prevent unauthorized usage.  The app is free through the App Store. With that, MaclLife readers, have you used PayPal’s app prior to this new update for all your transaction needs?  If not, will you now?  Feel free to leave comments below! Wireless Workflow, Emphatically Redefined

Apparently, you can secure venture-capital funding and launch a successful business all from an iPhone.   Case Study: Amos Winbush Occupation: Founder and Chief Executive Officer, CyberSynchs Gear: iPhone 3GS loaded with Citibank (to keep track of startup finances), Facebook (to keep track of CyberSynchs’ fan page and connect with fellow entrepreneurs), and Twitter (to stay abreast of business news and keep followers informed) Who knew that Pret A Manger at East 17th and Broadway could be such a locus of wheeling and dealing? Listen, we know you love your MacBook. And we love ours. But consider what a hassle it can be when you’re working on the road. A MacBook has to be painstakingly removed from a messenger bag or backpack and plugged in regularly for power (good luck with finding that A/C adapter). And you can’t really use it unless you’re sitting down. And you have to manually connect to whatever Wi-Fi hotspot you can find. And then there are the interminable delays while you boot and launch applications. Plus your MacBook apparatus weighs you down mightily–five pounds or more, and that’s on a good day. Yet for most professionals–especially at the executive level–getting work done without a computer is foolhardy at best, impossible at worst. The notebook is a necessary evil that represents a basic cost of doing business when you aren’t anchored to a desk. Amos Winbush took that conventional wisdom and slapped it in the face. When he launched CyberSynchs, a company that makes data-synchronization software, in 2008, he did it with little more than the iPhone in his pocket
