Section: Apple News , Conferences , Macworld , iPhone / iPod touch / iPad , iPad , Originals Apple may not have used Macworld Expo to announce the iPad, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t present. Cases are all over the show floor and many developers have been happy to discuss their iPad plans. We’ll have more on that later this weekend. But today, IDG held a special event roundtable discussion moderated by Jason Snell (editor of Macworld Magazine) and four other journalists, three of whom have actually had their hands on one. What did they have to tell us about the forthcoming device? Not much at all. The panelists included Snell, Dan Moren and Ted Landau of Macworld.com , Ryan Block of gdgt, and Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun Times . All but Ted were at Apple’s iPad announcement (they said they’d explain Ted’s absence, but never did), and all had the chance to play with the device for about 20 minutes, albeit not as it’s intended to be used. Apparently, the demo units were high up on pedestals, with Apple employees hovering over their every move. Not exactly the relaxed atmosphere displayed by Steve Jobs on stage. Each panelist was able to offer his thoughts on the device. Dan pointed out that he was “… surprised by how natural it feels

Apple Finally Releases Aperture 3

A month ago I vented about Aperture 2’s stagnation , and many of you rallied along with me. Well everyone can stow their torches and pitchforks — Aperture 3 has finally been released today by Apple. With over 200 new features , the latest version of Apple’s professional photo processing and organization software should have something to please everyone. The fairly obvious improvements like Faces, Places and 64-bit architecture (for Snow Leopard users with Core 2 Duo Processors) are there, of course. But there are so many cool new features — I won’t touch on all of them here — I had to mention a few. Backup on Import Smart & necessary! Automatically back up your master images to a second drive during import, freeing you from the need to perform a separate, manual backup. Color Labels Apply up to eight different color-coded labels to images to organize and group them. Add a custom name for each color label in Aperture preferences. Simple keyboard shortcuts allow you to apply labels using the keyboard. Fast Library Switching Close one Aperture library and open another on the fly by selecting the desired library from the Switch to Library submenu — no need to quit and restart Aperture. Focus Points Hover over the Focus Points button in the Camera Info pane to see the focus points used by your camera to autofocus the image. You can also click the button to turn the display of focus points on or off. Nondestructive Brushes YES!!!! Make nondestructive image enhancements to specific areas of any photo using new adjustment brushes. Use brush strokes to modify — brush in or brush away — most of the standard image adjustments available in the Adjustments inspector

Do you remember the notion we used to have that multiple carriers selling the iPhone in the same territory seemed like a golden ticket to more options, lower prices and altogether more competitive deals for customers? Well, forget it. Ain’t gonna happen. Not if the UK’s mobile market is anything to go by. Vodafone UK has today announced the launch date of the iPhone on their network (it’s January 14, by the way) but once you’ve picked your way through their online pricing minefield, it’s hardly anything to write home about. According to the Financial Times, Guy Laurence of Vodafone UK said the carrier has been busy preparing their network for the iPhone for the last twelve months; We started preparing our network over a year ago so that iPhone customers will really feel the advantage of being with Vodafone. We will offer an outstanding iPhone experience wherever our customers live, work and travel, delivering speed and reliability – something our customers have told us they really value. Yeah.
