With this week’s E3 news about Nintendo’s new offerings–like the 3DS and the rejuvenation of a plethora of popular titles from the Nintendo 64–iPhone and iPod touch users might be asking themselves if it’s time to go back to console gaming. And while most mobile iDevice users probably have an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 collecting dust somewhere in the house, it’s not guaranteed that all of them have had a chance to play with the Nintendo DS. With the knowledge that Nintendo may never bring their popular Mario and Zelda titles to the App Store, we scoped out 13 Nintendo DS games that have equal or better equivalents in the App Store to squelch some of your handheld envy. Plus, games sold in the App Store are so much more affordable. Read on for a list of wonderful game titles that will surely fill up your iPhone or iPod touch with plenty of fun. We should add that some of these apps even have Lite versions, which means you can try them out before you buy them–you can’t do that with a Nintendo DS, now can you?  Final Fantasy 2 – $8.99 Square Enix fans, cherish the fact that this gigantic game company has decided to release their classic RPG titles in the App Store. Fan favorites like Final Fantasy are available to iDevice holders, and we can expect to see Final Fantasy tactics coming soon . DS equivalent : Final Fantasy III Final Fantasy Tactics Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – $5.99 Inevitably, Sega became one of those companies that had their games ported over to other consoles, rather than having their titles locked into their own proprietary–now defunct–gaming platform. With that said, the advent of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog franchise making its way over to the App Store has been pretty great. And, we can expect a brand new iteration of the Sonic franchise in the App Store real soon . DS equivalent : Sonic Classic Connection Super Monkey Ball 2 – $5.99 The insanely addictive Super Monkey Ball was a starter game for the first generation Nintendo DS, and one of the better game titles offered at the grand opening of the App Store. DS equivalent : Super Monkey Ball DS The Sims 3 – $4.99 There’s nothing better than simulated living. When The Sims 3 game came out for both Mac and Windows platforms, the App Store also got its own version of the game

Apple Releases iPad 3.2 SDK Gold Master and Firmware

The iPad Software Development Kit (SDK) has now been stripped of its beta status as Apple released the gold master version of the development software today. iPad SDK 3.2 GM is the new release that all iPad applications must be built on in order for inclusion in the App Store from this point forward. In an email sent to developers, Apple states, "All members of the iPhone Developer Program can submit their iPad apps to iTunes Connect for review and approval. If you did not submit your app during the initial review period, but upload it by March 31, it will be reviewed but may not make the grand opening of the iPad App Store."  MacRumors notes that Apple has also just posted the iPad 3.2 Firmware ( download link ) on their servers. Of course, if you do download it, there’s nothing much you can do since only a select few in the world have iPads (hrm… someone with the lucky last name of "Jobs"). Also of interest is the iPad documentation file ( download link ) that provides this very interesting statement: "Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPad, for free. For example, if your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPad 4.x software release. Such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models."  MacRumors notes that this could mean a free upgrade to the 4.x software, but paid upgrades beyond that.

The Floodgates Have Opened: Submit Your iPad Apps Now!

You knew the day was coming, and as of last Friday, March 19th, you can now submit your iPad apps to Apple. If you get them in by March 27th, you’ll even be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store on April 3rd. Friday afternoon was a big day for iPhone OS developers — it marked the beginning of the race to trip over themselves to get their iPad apps submitted to Apple before the tablet arrives on April 3rd, according to AppleInsider . "iPad will begin shipping soon and your opportunity to be part of the grand opening of the iPad App Store starts today," the message to registered iPhone developers reads. "Submit your iPad app now for an initial review by the App Review Team and receive feedback on its readiness for the grand opening." Developers are required to submit their apps using the iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 5, the most current version of the SDK. Saturday, March 27th at 5 pm PST is the deadline for apps to be submitted in time for consideration for the grand opening. Of course, since almost no developers have actually touched an iPad (let alone actually used one), we’re sure the initial flood of apps will likely have issues that won’t get ironed out until the hardware gets put through the paces by programmers. So, who’s rushing to make the grand opening?

Apple now accepting iPad optimized app submissions

Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad , iPad , iDevice Apps , iPhone OS, SDK and hacks Can you remember what it was like when you opened a present as a child that required batteries, only to realize that you have none available? That’s what it would feel like if you get your hands on an iPad and it has no iPad-specific apps to play with. Sure, you can upscale your iPhone favorites, but where the iPad will really shine is with its own apps that really utilize the processor and screen space. Anyway, you won’t have to worry. Why? Because a couple of days ago, Apple sent an email out to developers signed up to the iPhone SDK development program that detailed the plans for iPad apps. Basically, developers can now submit their latest creations for review, and providing they’re sent before 5:00 p.m. on Saturday the 27th of March, they’ll have a shot at being available on the App Store on launch day. According to the email, if your app isn’t on a reviewer’s desk by then, you won’t be at the “grand opening.” So, what are you waiting for? If you’re a developer working on a killer iPad application, it’s time to start coding. There’s only a week left to submit your applications for review if you want to be present on the App Store on April 3rd. Oh, as a side note. It’s also now confirmed that the iPad App Store will be go live on April 3rd, so when you un-box your iPad and stop jumping around long enough to turn it on, you’ll find the App Store ready and waiting to show you what it can do. Excited? Heck yes! Via [ TUAW ] Full Story » | Written by Ed Parry for Appletell

Filed under: Retail , Apple , Found Footage TUAW fan George sent us a link to some video he shot earlier today at the grand opening of the Apple Store Union Square in Aberdeen, Scotland. The video is fun; not only is there the usual high-fiving and applause as customers enter the new store, but one of the Apple employees is wearing a kilt and there was a kilted piper entertaining the folks in line. In other Apple Store news, reader Christophe pointed us to exclusive photos on Macgeneration of the interior of the new Louvre store in Paris, France, which is scheduled to open on November 7th, 2009. That store will be the first Apple Store in France. Apple’s plans to dominate the European computer and consumer electronics market continue to bear watching, as these new Apple Stores are bound to increase international sales to impressive new levels. Filed under: Retail , Odds and ends , Apple , Flickr Find Ahhhh, Milano! The name makes me think about the Milan Cathedral , La Scala , fashion models , and the aggressive drivers in that city. And now, when I think of Milan, I can also fondly think of the new Apple Store Carosello . TUAW reader Filippo sent us a link to his Flickr gallery of the opening earlier today, which appears to have attracted a huge crowd of Apple fans. PhilApple, as he is known on Flickr, also captured the traditional “running of the geeks” in a short video upload. This is the well-known phenomenon in which the first customers are greeted by the applause, cheers, and general silliness of the Apple Store employees and other customers. While I wish Apple had chosen to place the store in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo, reputed to be the world’s oldest shopping mall, I’m happy for the Milanese to now have their very own Apple Store. Grazie, Filippo, for this set of photos! Flickr Find: Apple Store Carosello opening in Milan, Italy originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 05 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST.
