It may be a little early to say this, but to me it seems like Microsoft took all the disappointment and fear resulting from Apple’s dominance of the mobile devices category over its own products through the years and used that energy to create the Courier . It’s the first time I’ve ever seen another company’s product and thought “That seems like something Apple would’ve made.” Engadget posted more details about the device late last week, including two lengthy HD interface videos. Microsoft isn’t yet officially saying anything about whether or not this will become a production device, but Engadget seems very confident in its sources, and I’d be inclined to believe them since it seems more than likely Redmond is taking a page out of Apple’s marketing playbook by keeping things somewhat hush-hush but using “leaks” to steal focus. Microsoft gets a lot of flak for doing a tablet the wrong way, as demonstrated by the HP model it unveiled ahead of the iPad to grab some of the attention away from that spotlight hog. But the Courier doesn’t have the same shortcomings. For one, it’s not based on Windows 7, but on a version of Windows CE 6, which also provides the basis for the Zune HD’s interface and the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 OS. It also runs on the Tegra 2, an impressive mobile processor. It also has some considerable advantages over its Apple rival, especially if the hype is actually representative of what a production version will look like. First, there’s the size. The clamshell design allows it to be smaller than the iPad, while providing more screen real estate.

Apple just premiered the very first iPad commercial during the first ad break of tonight’s Academy Awards. You can also use it to power any of your USB gadgets, which makes it a perfect accessory for the iPad. While Apple claims 10+ hours of battery life, in practice, that may be different. And even if it is correct, there are times when you just don’t have access to a power outlet for an extended period of time. This battery will keep you going. Now a quick word of warning; while this battery can, and will charge a 15.4 or 17 inch MacBook Pro, it doesn’t do so efficiently. These models draw more watts than this model of battery is most efficient at providing. They say the this may reduce the charging abilities of this battery for these models of MacBook Pros to 70%. That’s still pretty useful, though, and not an issue for any MacBook with a smaller screen. It’s also not a concern of the iPad. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled program. This battery is a bit different from the larger capacity batteries offered by HyperMac. Its design is a bit more sleek, and since it’s targeted towards MacBook Air users, it has the MacBook Air connector as the default option. Mind you, the Air MagSafe connector will work just fine with other MacBooks, even larger Pros. And honestly, it looks nicer

Things are heating up in the patent wars with Android’s market share growing while the iPhone’s growth has shrunk. Both Apple and HTC have hit each other hard in the press while Cupertino has taken the competition to court over multiple alleged patent claims. Wired takes a look at those patents and envisions just what Google’s Android phones would look like if Apple won every part of the suit. Short answer: back to the drawing board for Android and HTC. For starters, there’s a number of just sheer aesthetic issues at play. The one near-constant about Apple products is that they are gorgeous. Layout, design, iconography, everything.

Filed under: OS , Software , Apple , iPhone There’s one more player in the ongoing the Apple/HTC lawsuit announced the other day. It’s Google, which yesterday admitted that it wasn’t a party to the lawsuit, but that it would “stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.” Lots of analysts and pundits have pegged the lawsuit as a direct shot across the bow from Apple at the Android OS (and the breakdown of patent claims that our colleagues at Engadget did seems to confirm that, with both old-school and wide-reaching patents matched up with brand new narrow UI claims), and it looks like Google will be coming to the rescue for its OS, if it has to. What form that rescue might take, we don’t know — it’s possible that Google could provide money, advice, or even lawyers to HTC if it feels that any part of its operating system might be threatened legally. But of course, that all depends on where the case goes — we’re still a long way away from the point where these companies would have to go before a judge and make their case. It certainly seems like Apple is in this one for the long haul, but if it all comes down to a check, Google may end up signing it as well. Apple’s line of notebooks are great computers, no doubt, but you’ve got to admit: they’re slick, streamlined designs come at the price of a paucity of ports. The MacBook and MacBook Pro only have two USB 2.0 ports, where as the MacBook Air only has one. Given how many gadgets charge and sync through USB,
