RealPlayer SP (where SP stands for social and portable) is so far the only all-in-one package for downloading, converting and sharing video from the web, and it couldn’t be any easier. Let’s say you’re watching a video on YouTube, and enjoy it so much that you want to take it with you on your iPhone, iPod touch or (soon) iPad. You could, of course, simply access YouTube on your device, but that depends on a decent data or WiFi signal. Using RealPlayer SP Beta, you can be watching the video on your computer, and RealPlayer SP will ask you if you wish to download the video. Simply click “Download,” and within a few minutes it’s stored on your computer. You can then press “Convert,” tell it to which device you want to send the video by selecting the name (no need to edit any settings if you’re unsure about them), and voila—it’ll be added to iTunes ready for your next sync. Unfortunately, if the video content is DRM protected, such as with Hulu, BBC iPlayer or content downloaded from the iTunes Store, you won’t be able to download or convert it. That’s fair, though; the copyright is in place for a reason, and it should be respected.

It’s the antithesis of the default iPhone Camera app, as it allows you to zoom, focus (3GS only), add copyright info, use a timer. crop, and more. Have multiple apps to handle these chores? Delete them. Camera Plus Pro does them all. Getting full use out of its capabilities is confusing at first, as the icons that represent the various tools aren’t very intuitive. You call them up by tapping an icon on the bottom left of the screen (or bottom right, depending upon the camera’s orientation; the user interface doesn’t rotate with the camera), then tap the one you want. Some are for use before the picture is taken, some for after, and you just have to know what’s what. A question mark icon can be tapped to pull up the legend if you forget, but if you need to take a photo quickly, you’re out of luck; it’s easy to get lost within the interface, and you’ll likely find yourself quitting the app and restrating just to get back to what you want.

Appletell reviews Camera Plus Pro and POV for iPhone

I’m not unfamiliar with video game emulators. I’m not endorsing them, mind you, but I’m not unfamiliar. So my curiosity was piqued when I heard tell of a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator for the iPhone, one that had managed to gain official sanction and was being sold in the App Store. I didn’t get to it fast enough. Nescaline , as the app was called, not only allowed you to play some built-in homebrew games, which probably would’ve been fine all on its own, but provided a way to download additional ROMs remotely. In effect, you could import any copyright-violating old-school NES ROM that you could find on the web. Such an ability was bound to get the app pulled, and pulled it has been. While it lasted, it sold for $6.99 and boasted many features like “multitouch” control, full-screen mode, tap-to-shoot light gun emulation, save-state writing and retrieval — even support for Game Genie codes. While the feature list may sound fairly impressive, user reviews from people who did manage to get their hands on the game were less than stellar, though not entirely negative. Commenter TokyoDisco at Pocket Gamer had this to say: I spent far too long trying to add my own roms though. I know where to get them and everything, but I’m obviously entering the URL in wrong.

NES Makes Short-Lived Appearance on the App Store

On Monday, an app that emulates the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hit the App Store. And just as quickly, Apple pulled it. If history teaches us anything, it’s that Apple isn’t fond of emulators of any kind in the App Store. But, there are exceptions, such as the Commodore 64 emulator that was recently approved. Yesterday, along came another one which at first glance appeared to have Apple’s blessing by showing up on the App Store at all, but by evening it was only a distant memory, according to 9to5Mac . Nescaline is the app in question, a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator that comes with five homebrew apps but also the ability to download NES.roms from the Internet by providing a URL. The $6.99 app is the work of developer Jonathan Zdziarski, author of the book iPhone Forensics . According to the now-pulled app description: Kick it old school with home-brew games written for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Nescaline allows you to play public domain NES games, five of which are included, or use Nescaline’s download feature to add games to your library from any remote URL. Features: – Multitouch support; use the directional pad and A+B or many other combinations together. – Works with many zapper-enabled games. Simply touch the screen where you want to shoot. – Save-state allows you to save games in progress and later restore them to the state they were in when you left the game. – Supports both landscape and portrait mode, in both full screen or original resolution – Enter Game Genie codes to enable cheats for your favorite games. – Alternate frame skip, palette, and advanced settings.

App Store NES Emulator Shown The Door As Quickly As It Entered

Section: iPod + iTunes , iPod touch , iPhone , iPhone , iPhone SDK & Apps I can barely believe my eyes, but Nescaline appears to be the first NES emulator on the App Store.  I’d normally recommend you go buy this before it’s taken down, but I get the feeling that Nescaline is here to stay, as it seems to be very legal. Here’s the legal mumbo jumbo from Nescaline’s site . Is this Legal? According to Bleem! vs. Sony, emulators were ruled to be perfectly legal in case law so long as they do not include any copyrighted material (such as a BIOS) that infringes copyright. Blah, blah, blah.  I was hoping it was going to say, “I will make it legal.” Star Wars references aside, this is like totally exciting. Sorry, eight-year-old me is trying to break free to play NES once more. Let’s get onto the game. It comes with five public domain NES roms and a warning to not pirate commercial games

The actions came after Apple’s permanent injunction against Psystar earlier this week , which gave Psystar until December 31st to stop selling its Mac clones. The clones violated Apple’s End User License Agreement for Mac OS X, which expressly forbids use of the operating system on non-Apple hardware. This also marks the end of Psystar’s Rebel EFI software , which had been Psystar’s only viable product since early December. Many Psystar watchers doubted if Psystar would continue to sell it. Psystar first started selling its computers in April 2008, and Apple filed a lawsuit soon after in July 2008. The company was granted a motion against Psystar to stop selling its computers, preinstalled with Mac OS X, by Judge William Alsup in November. Psystar paid Apple a $2.7 million settlement earlier this month, which included $1,337,500 in copyright infringement damages.
