Valve’s announcement that their Steam service would soon be available to Mac users is huge news to the Mac gaming community. While the iPhone and iPod touch have taken off as gaming platform, the Mac has languished in a sort of gaming limbo. Sure we get games, but they’re usually a few months–or even years–behind the Windows version and some games are announced and never materialize. With today’s announcement, The Mac has taken another step to becoming a real gaming gaming platform. We had a chance to talk Steam’s Project Manager, John Cook about their move to the Mac platform, the future of Steam and Valve on the Mac, third-party developers and native- versus Cider-ported games on the Mac.    What convinced Valve to create a Mac version of Steam? John Cook: We recently announced Portal 2 in cooperation with the Steam community, and that’s an example of the transition we’re going through between entertainment as a product and entertainment as a service.  Another example of entertainment as service would be the 100+ updates to Team Fortress 2 that we’ve released since it launched in 2007.  As a result of that on-going service of Team Fortress 2, our highest sales for the product actually occurred 18 months after we launched.  In general, service businesses need to be as close to and as connected to their customers as possible. In order to support entertainment as a service, you need open, high performance Internet clients, and the Mac does a great job at that. What were some of the technological hurdles you encountered while porting Steam?

Woo hoo! Now we know when we get to buy the iPad. However, we haven’t been told where we get to buy it. Of course the Apple Stores (both online and off) will carry it, but the end of the press release has a cryptic statement that the iPad will be sold at select (emphasis added) Apple Authorized Resellers. That probably means not every place that can sell Apple products will be allowed to sell iPads. This is a curious position for Apple and its distribution strategy. Which model does it choose? Let’s take the iPhone. It’s very limited in distribution. Apple and AT&T controlled sales at the beginning and then eventually allowed places such as Wal-Mart and BestBuy to carry it. Apple COO Tim Cook confirmed BestBuy would sell the iPad but didn’t say who else would have that capability. Logically, anywhere you can buy an iPhone you should be able to buy an iPad, right? What about any place you can buy an iMac? Only time will tell, but here is what I think will happen. Cue the special effects. First to get the iPad will be campus bookstores

Far too often, we still see people stuck in the Internet stone age when sharing files. They either try to email large files to recipients, or choose a file sharing service that bombards the recipient with advertisements before they can download the files. Email is great for sending small files, but when you want to share large files for work, send large files to friends and family, what service should you use? We hope to get you away from those horrendous file sharing services and share with out what we think are the best services to share large files online between friends, family, co-workers, or really anyone.     Apple’s iDisk ($99/year) Sure, you might have a beef with the price that Apple charges for its online services called MobileMe, and you might have chuckled to yourself during the re-launch of the service when it switched from being .Mac and experienced a ton of problems. But Apple provide an elegant solution for a price that’s not too bad when you consider all you’re getting. On the file storage side of things, you get 20GBs of storage with 200GBs of monthly data transfer (although we think they should just up the data transfer to unlimited). The online storage is shared with your email, but if you don’t use the email often, you can just reallocate the disk space so you have more iDisk storage than email storage. With MobileMe there’s no additional software to download and install. Just type in your username and password in the MobileMe System Preference panel and you’re good to go. When you enable iDisk, a new drive shows up on your Mac, giving you the ability to drag and drop files on it to upload them.

Send Large Files Over the Internet Without Enraging the Receiver

iPhone applications and games range from mildly amusing the outright mandatory for anyone with an iPhone.  Here are mini reviews for a game that makes you manage a lawn, one that helps you give a stay of execution for a stick figure, and one that gives you a world of music at your fingertips. Sunday Lawn In gaming it seems that almost every concept has already been co-opted, which has sent developers reaching.   Over the last few years it has seemed that activities normally seen as chores have become the source of gaming premises.   Donut Games’ Sunday Lawn is a, ahem, lawn mowing game.   The basic framework is to mow a lawn in the most efficient way possible.   To do this you set the direction for where you little animated worker will go with his lawnmower, and to get the largest number of points you want to plan for the largest strips of mowing at a time.   This means that you want to get the biggest patches of sod covered in the fewest number of moves. This is a basic principle behind a number of classic puzzle games, which Sunday Lawn is with a more colorful palette.   There is a lot of depth in Sunday Lawn as the gameplay options are numerous.   Even amongst these different gameplay types you have a graduated level system that will actually keep you playing for quite a while.   You can complete the level adequately enough to progress on, and then you can also go back to try and complete it according to even more rigorous standards.   These all add to the overall package with Sunday Lawn, but if the basic premise does not work for you it will not matter much in the end.   The gameplay is fun, to a point, but there is not really enough here to legitimize enough gameplay time to get through all the features.

Last night Adobe, along with the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, celebrated 20 years of its flagship photo-manipulation application at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco. You can check out our history of Photoshop on the site now.  The event showcased the main updates to Photoshop over the years and featured a presentation by Adobe’s senior creative director, Russell Brown. Russell’s entertaining presentation included a working version of Photoshop 1.0.7 on an iPhone. The application was developed for the event by Ansca Mobile using Corona. The application only adjusts the levels of a photo, but it’s a fun piece of nostalgia. You can check out video of Russell demoing the application in the video below.     As of now, there are no plans to release the app in the iTunes store.    Ansca shares the backstory on the unreleased special-edition app on their blog : Russell originally approached us shortly after we launched Corona 1.0, and his idea was that the “Levels” panel was the soul of the original Photoshop — and that it would be really cool to see it replicated on the iPhone. We even used the original pre-1.0 program icon, from when “PhotoHut” (as Photoshop was originally named) was first presented to Adobe.  We’re hoping this app hits the App Store soon.

One of the great excitements about the iPad bringing books to its large screen was the potential for comic books and magazines to really deliver some killer content. The 9.7" color screen could bring seriously enhanced readability as well as create a new genre of interactive graphic media. In response to one overlooked demographic, Oceanhouse Media has launched additional iPhone and iPod touch apps featuring some beloved children’s titles. And they’ve got their eyes set on the iPad. Released a week ago, the three titles The Cat in the Hat , Dr. Seuss’s ABC , and Dr. Seuss Camera – The Cat in the Hat Edition render beautifully on the iPhone.

Filed under: Hardware , Humor , Multimedia , Apple , Macbook Pro One of the things I missed in the news last week due to being so busy at Macworld (along with most of the Olympics, though we did get to watch the opening ceremony at a post-show dinner) was the brand new Toy Story 3 trailer — Pixar’s latest movie has Buzz and Woody in a third adventure, and while I won’t spoil the details, it does appear that Apple plays a big part in the movie. Macenstein has a quick breakdown of all of the places that Macs appear in the new trailer, with cameos by both Safari and iTunes, and director Lee Unkrich actually tweeted a picture of his editing session for the movie on a MacBook Pro (in Avid Media Composer ) at 36,000 feet! Of course, Steve Jobs was the owner and CEO of Pixar for twenty years, and he now is the largest individual Disney shareholder with a seat on the company’s board of directors. Pixar always produces excellent films — Toy Story was the studio’s first big feature as a studio, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the franchise after moving on to more mature pictures like Finding Nemo and Up. As always, when the movie comes out on June 18th, we’ll have to keep an eye out for nods in Apple’s direction.
