Okay, Apple’s a couple of weeks in making its self-imposed deadline, but no matter: Apple has just released update 3.1 to their Boot Camp software, enabling official support for Windows 7. The update comes in two separate flavors — one for 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and one for 32-bit versions — and require official DVD

Filed under: Software Update , Apple If you’ve been waiting with bated breath to dual-boot Windows 7 on your Mac, your time has come. File under ” better late than never “: Apple has now updated Boot Camp with support for Windows 7 . With separate downloads for 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows 7, the download also requires an authentic copy of Windows 7 or Windows 7 upgrade, and is only supported on more recent Intel-based Macs; no Macs produced before 2007 will support Windows 7, as outlined in this Apple support page . If you’re upgrading your Mac’s other side from Windows Vista to Windows 7, you’ll first want to download and install the Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7 , which “safely unmounts the read-only Macintosh volume on Microsoft Vista.” Let us know in the comments if you have any issues with the update. Apple Misses Deadline For Windows 7 Support

Anyone recall as far back as October, when Apple promised it would update Boot Camp by year’s end to support Windows 7? Turns out, they might have been fibbing. According to AppleInsider , Apple is likely to miss their self-imposed year-end deadline for officially supporting Microsoft’s Windows 7 under Boot Camp, pending any last-minute, New Year’s Eve updates that seem unlikely at best. Back in October, Apple wrote in a support document : “Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.” As it turns out, Windows 7 already runs quite well under Boot Camp, at least on our 15” MacBook Pro 2.63 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. We were able to wipe our former Windows XP installation and install Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade Edition) without too many hitches. The only hiccup we’ve seen for now is some occasional funkiness with the trackpad driver, but otherwise the Boot Camp drivers included with Snow Leopard work just fine. AppleInsider queried an Apple support representative to find out if Cupertino had any last-minute Software Update surprises in store for us, but the rep said that his division — which fields Boot Camp-related questions — had received no update on the situation. The rep also believes that the Boot Camp update is still undergoing tests, and said it was “very unlikely” that such an update would surface in the next 24 hours before the curtain falls on 2009

Apple has announced that official Boot Camp support for Windows 7 will be coming by the end of this year. According to a knowledge base article on Apple’s support site, " Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year. This support will require a software update to Boot Camp. " Of course the compatibility of Windows 7 means that some initial Intel Mac models will not be supported, mainly the following models: – iMac (17-inch, Early 2006) – iMac (17-inch, Late 2006) – iMac (20-inch, Early 2006) – iMac (20-inch, Late 2006) – MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006) – MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2006) – MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006) – MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2006) – Mac Pro (Mid 2006, Intel Xeon Dual-core 2.66GHz or 3GHz)   If you have already purchased Windows 7 and are wanting to run it on your Mac, we have found that Windows 7 does in fact run on some newer models like the unibody MacBook Pro. However, some features like the Multi-Touch trackpad are a bit finicky. You can also run Windows 7 in virtual machine software like VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop . Via MacRumors

It’s Windows 7 Day: Are We the Early Adopters?

Apple did pretty much everything they could to steal some of Windows 7’s thunder by announcing some pretty major hardware changes earlier in the week, but Thursday is here nonetheless, and that means Microsoft’s latest OS is on store shelves now, ripe for the picking. Question is, will Mac users be helping with the harvest? I’m getting a copy (might pick up a burger , too), but for me it’s a legitimate business expense, so the decision, even without an upgrade path (I’ve just been using the Windows 7 RC on my iMac, and don’t have an existing retail license), it makes financial sense for me to have access to a Windows machine. Maybe you’re in the same boat. The question isn’t really whether Mac users are also Windows users, since recent research on the subject seems to indicate that yes, there is in fact plenty of crossover . I’m wondering whether it might be the case that Apple fans not only buy Windows, but that we might also represent a big chunk of the early adopter crowd for this new incarnation. Everyone I know who is buying a copy of Windows 7, upgrade or otherwise, uses a Mac. It may not be their primary machine (yes, that does actually happen), but they have one nonetheless. Most of those people are planning on installing Windows 7 on a boot camp partition or a virtualized PC using Parallels or VMware Fusion. I know you’re thinking that I probably surround myself with like-minded people, and as a result have a lot of Mac-using friends, but that isn’t the case

First off, I probably haven’t endeared myself with the title of this piece. In fact, you’re probably wondering where you put your torch and pitchfork, and how quickly you can Google my address and come egg my house. And I can more than understand your sentiment. Still, the fact remains that the grass can look fairly green and healthy on the other side. So after years of listening to the smug kids at Best Buy and GameStop talk smack about gaming on the Mac, we went looking for — and found — five excellent Windows PC games that not only are dirt cheap, but perform amazingly well under Apple’s Boot Camp technology. That being said, fire up the Boot Camp Assistant , carve out a Windows partition, install Windows XP, Windows Vista, or the Windows 7 beta, and get your game on. These incredibly fun titles will level the playing field between you and those friends of yours who are always rubbing it in when a hot game isn’t available on the Mac.   Left 4 Dead Developer: Valve Corporation Publisher: Electronic Arts Price: $27.99 at Amazon , or $29.99 at Steam ESRB Rating: Mature Minimum Requirements: Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor. 1GB of RAM. 128MB graphics card. Apple’s Mac OS X v10.6 was released last Friday and for most of us the transition from Leopard to Snow Leopard went by without incident. However, we’ve spent part of last weekend scouring Apple’s discussion boards and support site for solutions to problems people have been reporting with the upgrade. Apple Freezes Snow Leopard APIs, Makes Mac Drives Accessible Under Boot Camp

Snow Leopard is starting to settle down into a relatively stable piece of software that will likely resemble the final release version, according to Engadget . Some speculate that it could receive retail release alongside iPhone OS 3.0 as soon as WWDC, which takes place in early June. Like iPhone OS 3.0, Apple is now giving developers the go-ahead to develop Snow Leopard-specific apps without fear of major feature changes or revisions, since they just announced that the operating system’s APIs are now frozen. That should also mean that the feature list we’re seeing reported now from devs with access to the Snow Leopard beta is an accurate representation of what the new OS will ship with. Some of the highly popularized features of Snow Leopard are the inclusion of QuickTime X, the long awaited update to the resident OS X media player software that will finally take it beyond version 7.xx. Another recent addition is Chinese character handwriting input recognition, a feature it borrows from its portable cousin, and a finished version of the Grand Central architecture, which lets devs use multiple processor cores without necessarily having the advanced programming knowledge usually required. MacRumors points out yet another new feature they’ve spotted, which is the ability to access HFS+ formatted drives in Windows using drivers built into the new version of Boot Camp that will ship with Snow Leopard. The only people not pleased about that are probably the developers of MacDrive , a third-party Windows program which currently allows you to do the very same thing, but for a price. So long as Apple includes drivers for accessing NTFS drives in OS X, the circle will finally be complete.

Boot Camp update addresses Macbook multitouch trackpads

Section: Apple News , Updates , Software + Apps , Virtualization , Mac + Computers , Laptops , MacBook Air , MacBook , MacBook Pro , Operating Systems , Windows Apple has released an update to Boot Camp.  The update is pretty slim on details. Here’s what it has to say… This update improves the performance of the Apple Multi-Touch trackpad when running Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Vista on a Mac computer using Boot Camp. The release also has a link to additional information about the update, but the link is currently broken. Though details are a little less verbose than they could be, I think it’s safe to say this is a welcomed update to all new MacBook owners who use Boot Camp considering how badly the trackpad has worked under Windows in the past. Though, if ArsTechnica is correct, this update just swaps one kind of broken for another. Originally, the cursor moved erratically no matter what, but now that’s been fixed. The problems now relate to recognition between left and right clicks, and moving the cursor and scrolling.  If you ask me, this is still an improvement. You could solve all of these problems by getting VMWare Fusion and virtualizing Windows. Or, better yet, buy a mouse. Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , Gaming , Hardware , Software , Odds and ends , Apple Finally, someone with more money that I have (I want a new MacBook Pro, but haven’t yet convinced myself to shell out the dough to replace my old yet trusty G4 12″ Powerbook) has put the new MBP and those shiny graphics chips to the test, and drummed up some real benchmarking numbers in Boot Camp. It turns out to be PC World, strangely enough. And the verdict? Well, it’s not quite so great. The good news is that the MacBook Pro is faster than ever, and graphics have significantly improved. And trust us, any improvement over the old chips is a step in the right direction. The bad news is that in a practical situation (like playing the Crysis demo , which is actually about a year old at this point), a MacBook Pro in Boot Camp at the highest settings isn’t actually playable, and the 15 fps you might squeeze out of it on a good day still can’t compare to the 50 fps you can get out of even average video cards in a Windows PC. If the graphics are turned down, it’s a different story — we’ve seen a new MBP run games well in Boot Camp already, so it’ll play, but Apple still has a ways to go to be competitive with brand new games. But let’s keep this all in perspective — it’s very good news when you compare the new MacBook Pros to the old ones. Apple is at least realizing that 3D performance needs an upgrade in their units
