In case you’re just getting off of work, just waking up, or your plane just landed after a 15-hour flight, here’s all of today’s Apple news condensed into one quick post: Steve Jobs looked good at today’s event, which was attended by Steve Wozniak. Steve J. did a nice shout-out to his “partner in crime” at the beginning of the presentation. Jobs announced that there are now 300 Apple Retail Stores in 10 countries, with new stores opening in Spain soon. The Apple Stores get more than 1 million visitors combined on some days — the primary reason why the company dropped their presence at Macworld Expo. Other stats — 120,000,000 iOS devices, 230,000 new iOS activations per day (not including updates), 6.5 billion downloads from the App Store , 250,000 apps on the App Store. iOS 4.1 will be out next week , featuring fixes for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G issues. There will also be support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos, the ability to upload HD video to other devices (Apple TV) over WiFi (this is known as AirPlay), 99¢ TV show rentals, and GameCenter. The latter will bring a new level of interactive gaming to the platform. In November, we’ll see iOS 4.2 for iPad , iPhone and iPod touch . This adds printing support, AirPlay, multi-tasking, and folders (among other features) to the iPad. Event streaming to stress-test new datacenter

Not much of a surprise, but nice to have some details: Cult of Mac cites a source close to Apple saying that the live stream of today’s iPod event will be used to put some real-time load on Apple’s new North Carolina data center . The facility isn’t all the way operational quite yet, but it’s apparently ready enough to play a major role in today’s festivities. The NC datacenter is five times the size of Apple’s similar facility on the West Coast and is officially intended to support the iTunes music and app stores . Obviously there’s a lot more horsepower needed for streaming content, so here’s where you’ll find it. As noted last night, today’s live stream is intended for Intel Mac OS X 10.6 users in Safari, iPhone/iPod touch users running iOS 3.1 or higher, and iPad users. Support for the HTTP Live Streaming methodology is included in the current version of the ffmpeg open source library , so in theory apps like Mplayer should be able to handle the stream; VLC may also work. With the September 2010 Apple media event just days away, here’s a quick team round-up of our takes on the likely product introductions. Victor Agreda : I’m betting on an iPod nano with touchscreen (because flicking is the new scrolling), and an iPod touch with a camera and retina screen. As for the “One More Thing?” How about a digital shelf in iTunes for your music for MobileMe subscribers? I’m expecting a new iTunes supporting this feature (and more) later this year. Megan Lavey: I’m with the crowd on the iPod nano and iPod touch rumors, but I think if the smaller-form nano is true then the shuffle will be quietly retired. I will go out on a limb and say that if there is no iTV/Apple TV mention this time, it’ll be there in January. I think “One More Thing” will be a cloud-based subscription to iTunes, of which the seeds are already there. Erica Sadun : My money rests on a 4th generation iPod touch and a new nano. I’m expecting the touch to introduce a camera (with FaceTime), retina display, and A4 chip. I’d also like to see iTunes get updated, possibly centered around features arising from the Lala streaming music acquisition. My outlier is an iPad refresh, shipping around November with device options that leverage a newly seeded 4.2 iOS beta. Steve Sande : We’ve seen images of a new iPod nano case and heard rumors of a touchscreen model, so I’m going with that. The iPod touch needs a Retina Display and two cameras for Facetime chats, so that’ll be the second announcement. Third announcement will be a new version of iLife (iLife ’11) for both Mac and iOS

Google Adds Push Notifications to Mobile App

It’s always been a bit of a pain to integrate our beloved Gmail and Google Calendar with our Apple devices. Syncing Google Calendar requires setting up an Exchange account–an extra hoop that makes Google syncing a lot less effortless than something like MobileMe. Thankfully, Google has given all of us loyal users a handy solution–Push notifications for their own mobile app! Google’s Mobile App has always been a nice way to check Gmail and Google Calendar. It’s well designed and has voice search. But, it never felt all that integrated with our iPhones, since it lacked a notification system. Do you remember how exciting the notion of Google Voice on the iPhone was? No, not the consolation-prize web app version of Google Voice available to us now , but Google Voice on the hoof, one tap away from use on your Apple-branded device. Sadly, the dream of a native iPhone app for the service has never materialized, leaving Google Voice users without the on-device support or features that the excellent service warrants. How did it all go wrong? Google and Apple used to be so good together. We always thought they’d be the couple to make it out alive. Le Sigh. A few days past the one-year anniversary of the FCC’s probe into why Apple refused the entry of Google Voice into the iTunes App Store, the ever-insightful writers over at TechCrunch have put together an interesting feature on the drama surrounding Apple’s decision to disallow the App’s acceptance and the road that led up to such a depressing decree to be issued in the first place. The feature is well worth the five minutes of your time that it’ll take you to ingest it, and as a byproduct, will make you sound like an uber-geek should you bring it up in conversation with your less tech-savvy hipster friends.

There were light fingers this week; there was at least one snowy white iPhone 4 in the Great White North; there were apps galore; emails from Steve; more incredible impossible hard-to-credit stuff from Piper Jaffray, which seems to specialize in pixie dust and random guessing; and there was Google and Verizon, trying to make us hate them more than we hate AT&T. Oh yeah, there was also Mac|Life, where all of this makes sense. Features: – The Google / Verizon Net Neutrality Pact – 10 Years in the Future – We’re big fans of an open Internet and the freeflow of information and entertainment. There are parties, media conglorporations mostly, who aren’t quite so thrilled and who would like to see limitations on the other guy’s traffic and a zippier download time for their content. How to share your iPhone apps via Home Sharing

Apple allows you to do that simply and legally, as long as both computers are on the same network. This gets around the rather silly restriction of allowing an iPhone/iPod touch to only sync apps with one computer. Home Sharing is an iTunes feature that Apple doesn’t make a lot of noise about, which is odd because it makes it simple to sync and transfer purchases between computers on the same network. Movies, TV shows, music, and yes, even apps can easily—and legally—be swapped between up to five computers, so if you’re in the living room and suddenly realize the song you want to hear is in the bedroom, or if you want to share an app with a family member who’s iPhone is synched to another computer, Home Sharing is the answer. First, you need two computers on the same network with iTunes open. Then, if it’s not already active, go to Advanced > Turn on Home Sharing in the menu bar.

Mac Dateline No, it’s not the campy news show, but actually a nifty Mac OS X application that shows the date in place of your dock (you have to hide the dock for this to work). Facebook for iPhone Update Brings New Places Feature

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg may have infamously given up his iPhone recently for an Android handset, but that doesn’t mean that his company has abandoned Apple’s iOS. Following a press conference Wednesday to introduce the new location-based Places feature, an iPhone app update hit which adds the feature. Facebook has now added the ability for users to “check in” to their current location right from the iPhone app, which will let you see who else is at your location as well as tag friends who are with you. Places will ultimately allow businesses to “claim” their own locations and offer discounts or promotions to users, according to AppleInsider . If that functionality sounds familiar, that’s because it’s already been made popular by startups such as Gowalla, Foursquare and Yelp — but rather than competing with the existing services, Facebook has partnered with them to allow badges and check-ins from the third-party services to carry over to and from Facebook. Debuting first on the iPhone app with the just-released 3.2 update, Facebook Places is also available from the mobile website at touch.facebook.com and the company is planning to offer the feature on other smartphone apps in the future. The Places feature is being slowly rolled out, so you may see a message that “This feature will be available in your region soon” as we did here in both the Midwest as well as MacLife.com’s home turf in San Francisco. No need for apocalyptic panic, the feature should light up in a day or two. Facebook for iPhone 3.2 isn’t all about Places — you can now set the privacy of individual status updates, see all recipients of inbox messages and iOS 4 users can now upload photos and video in the background. The app also squashes some bugs, most notably a delay when commenting on a post or posting a status update as well as issues that cropped up with Notes and the News Feed. Perplexingly, Facebook is still not a universal app, nor is there a separate version available for the iPad, which seems to be crying out for it (although the app does run on the iPad, but it’s a confining experience). Only this time, the bombs are enemy jeeps, trucks and tanks, your missiles are various WWII airplanes, and your cities are a mysterious Aztec device that could bring about a global catastrophe. So, get to cleaning. I want to see this jungle spotless before your general comes over this weekend. What is it? The Squadron HD is an effective combination of the aforementioned arcade games of yore and the more modern “Flight Control” for iPhone, with some time management sprinkled in. In other words, it’s a stress game. Using your squadron of airplanes (and some special weapons), you have to prevent the enemy motor pools from reaching and activating the Aztec device. One of the sweetest parts of a pretty sweet looking app is VEVO’s Ask:Reply feature, which allows the application’s users to put the screws to some of the biggest artists out there today. It’s worth noting that currently, the app is only available to Canadian and American App Store clients. How To Sync Apps From Multiple Macs

My husband surprised me with an iPad for my birthday, loaded with about 25 apps. However, those apps are now tied to his personal iTunes account on his MacBook, so when I go to sync the iPad with my own MacBook, my iTunes wants to override his apps with the apps that I had previously purchased for my iPhone. I don’t want to do this, so I haven’t synced my iPad yet. Ideally, I would like to merge his apps with my apps. Is there any way? Yes. Any content that your husband purchased through the iTunes Store on his Mac or through the App Store on the iPad—apps, music, TV shows, and movies–can be stored on up to five authorized computers. Those five computers can then sync to any number of iPads or iPhones. Each iTunes account can be authorized on up to five computers.

We’re pretty certain this week you rushed to iTunes to download the security-patch-update-only for iOS 4, you know, the one that renders jailbreak.me unworkable. Sure you did. Since Mobile Safari handles PDF files so wonderfully in the first place (cough cough, GoodReader), you open them up all the time and needed to be safe against bad script action. Right? Right? Are those crickets or did someone switch our ringtone again? Features: – 25 Awesome Safari Extensions – We must admit: we have loved Firefox since the days even before it was called Mozilla. Everything about it was better than Internet Explorer from the get-go. By the time Safari showed up, we were pretty locked in with our extensions on Firefox, and Safari’s lack was a dealbreaker. Well, Apple noticed this and finally came around to the idea of extensions. Like everyone else’s user-created content, 25% is garbage, 50% duplicate ideas, and 25% are sheer genius. All it took was a little self teaching in web design, and an inspirational hero in Steve Jobs. Christian – who resides in Corby, Northamptonshire – received his first computer at seven years old. Three years after, he received a Mac and then began to learn some web design. Fast forward four years later in 2008, he started his first company. It’s a site that might be familiar to some called Mac Bundle Box. The site was visually pleasing, almost reminiscent of something Apple might even come up with. On the site, one could purchase a package of various Mac OS X apps for a discounted price and for a limited time. Christian negotiated various deals with developers in order to receive a discount on their apps. While the bundle of apps would normally retail for about $400, he sold it for a mere tenth of the price. To boot, if a large enough amount of users purchased the package, a new app would become unlocked for all buyers. And if that wasn’t enough, Christian also learned the skills of any blooming businessman…philanthropy. He dedicated a percentage of all sales to charity. So, how did the venture work out? In the first two years, the Mac Bundle Box made a cool million (or about 700,000 British Pounds). But why stop there? Owens has now moved on to a new medium, called Branchr, which is a pay-per-click advertising company that sends out 300 million ads a month on well over 17,500 websites, iPhone/Android apps. That company has already made $800,00 in the first year, employs eight adults, and that even includes his mother Alison, 43. While it would seem the sky would be the limit, in the next ten years, Christian’s goal is to make one hundred million British pounds through Branchr. Branchr has even already bought another company, and Christian reinvests all of it right back into the company. So what’s his tip? “There is no magical formula to business, it takes hard work, determination and the drive to do something great.” Indeed. iPad Starting To Become Go-To Reading Device

(Image courtesy of ipadmediadownloads.com) As the iPad begins to slowly but surely creep into the hands of more and more users, a recent survey is showing that the device is starting to become the unit of choice for many consumers when it comes to reading. That includes reading newspapers, magazines, and books, according to a recent survey of UK iPad owners. The survey was conducted by Cooper Murphy Webb and found that of the 1,034 iPad owners polled via telephone from July 28th to August 10th, 43% are now using the iPad more than 10 hours per week, and most of that actually takes place within the household. In other findings, while the iPad is huge for browsing through magazines and books, laptops/notebooks are still the primary entertainment unit – perhaps from the lack of Flash? Also, 31% of iPad users choose the iPad over their laptop, mobile phone, e-reader as well as print media for reading newspapers and magazines. In other numbers, 41% of iPad owners prefer the iPad also for reading books, which one would think would prove huge for apps like iBooks, Kindle for the iPad as well as Barnes and Noble. It’s hard enough being in a competitive market with PC evangelists and Android users, so why not download a couple of apps that could really showcase your Mac and iOS device’s true capabilities? Here are a couple of apps that can really show what your Mac, iPhone and iPad are made of. Mac Geek Tools We know you’re not a huge fan of widgets, but we promise that these are actually helpful. GeekTool 3.0 is a glorified preferences pane/system preferences module for Leopard and up that allows you display all sorts of nifty info on your desktop.
