Section: iPhone / iPod touch / iPad , iPad A couple of weeks before Apple announced the iPad , my wife told me she’d like to have a Kindle. I told her to hang tight, because Apple was likely going to announce a competitive device soon. They did, and we’re now set to pre-order the iPad in a couple of days. But exactly how iBooks will look and behave on the iPad, we’re not completely sure. The gang over at iPadInsider, however, have some video from Penguin that gives us our best idea yet. At the FT Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference in London earlier this month, Penguin Group CEO John Makinson revealed some of the company’s titles that are coming to the iPad. “We will be embedding audio, video and streaming into everything we do. The epub format, which is the standard for ebooks at the present, is designed to support traditional narrative text, but not this cool stuff that we’re now talking about.” The books, as expected, are more like applications than their print counterparts, with interactive elements and video abounding. This makes the books more for kids and more involving for adults.

At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today, Razer announced a commitment to increase support for Mac users. Razer has a wide variety of peripherals geared directly toward the gaming community, and they committed today to having Mac drivers for all upcoming Razer products. Razer has been a Mac supporter for some time, with a Mac-specific version of their DeathAdder 1800DPI mouse with five independently programmable buttons for a couple of years. They also have Mac drivers for higher-end gaming mice including the Naga MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game–if you didn’t know that, you probably don’t want one) laser mouse with a resolution of 5600DPI and a whopping 17 programmable buttons designed for MMO lovers. It has been a great week for Mac gamers, and hot on the heels of announcements like Valve bringing Steam to the Mac we have assurances of access to high-quality accessories–including a new mouse, keyboard, and headset designed specifically to work well with StarCraft II.

Filed under: Apple Unit testing refers to a software validation methodology that allows programmers to test individual program units for correctness. It’s been an ongoing question in the iPhone developer community as to whether the iPhone’s view controller class is testable or not. In response to these discussions, iPhone developer Jonah Williams has written up a view controller unit testing how-to over at the Carbon Five web blog. His write-up offers examples that show how to incorporate some best practices into your code. Williams points out how broken NIB bindings are a common problem for iPhone OS applications. To address these issues, he regularly adds simple assertions that test that each IB outlet and action are set properly from inside his view controller class implementations. These assertions check that IBOutlet instance variables are not set to nil and that IBAction targets have been assigned, adding a layer of protection against broken bindings. Another typical view controller issue involves responding to application memory warnings. To respond, he adds tests that ensure that each view-dependent property gets correctly released and re-created as views unload and then later reload. By building these into test methods, he can execute this behavior on demand, and ensure that the sequence will execute flawlessly in real world conditions. Finally, Williams discusses view controller interdependencies. Often instances are tightly intertwined, with objects acting as clients for each other.

When iTunes web preview pages first appeared for songs and albums the industry was abuzz with the possibility that iTunes could be migrating to the cloud. iTunes preview has so far had little impact on how we use purchased media content, but it has had a huge impact on how we find iTunes media content on the web, especially with iPhone apps. The iTunes web preview pages are an enormous draw for search engines and consistently rank high in the results when searching for the names of apps. A Quick History of iTunes Web Preview Previously, web links to iTunes content opened a redirect page (hosted on phobos.apple.com) that asked you to wait “One Moment Please” while the iTunes application was launched. This page only had a thumbnail of the cover and sparsely listed just the title and publisher. iTunes web preview first appeared on November 13, 2009 with full pages including descriptive text (hosted on itunes.apple.com). Audio clip previews were added on January 7, 2010. These pages still launch the iTunes application, but also include the full description, select customer reviews, and links to related content.
