Once Upon a Time, Long Before the iPad, Steve Jobs Rode a BMW Motorcycle

Two years before the Macintosh was unveiled, Apple’s then-and-future CEO was photographed by Charles O’Rear for a National Geographic Magazine feature on Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, riding a 1966 BMW R60/2 motorcycle. 27 years old, with longish hair (no helmet), wearing tan boots and a light-colored shirt with sleeves rolled back (no black turtleneck), Jobs looks like he’s having the time of his life riding the two-wheel Bimmer in San Francisco freelancer Moira Johnston’s feature “High Tech, High Risk, and High Life in Silicon Valley,” published in the magazine’s October 1982 issue. However, notwithstanding his (excellent) taste in bikes, Steve’s stated ambition, when interviewed by Johnston over herb tea at a vegetarian restaurant, was modestly at the time to become “the Volkswagen” of the microcomputer sector rather than its BMW — which became a popular automotive analogy with Apple-watching commentators later on — although he emphasizes that “We’d rather call the Apple a personal than a home computer.” The article notes that the Apple computer “has inspired a dedicated cult of hard-core enthusiasts who trade new uses for the computer in the columns of Apple magazines” and that Jobs had “become a potent role model for a new breed of bright kids who are writing and selling software programs and, with their arcane computer skills, gaining the prestige formerly tasted only by the high-school football team.” Johnston also reports that besides the BMW two-wheeler, Jobs, already holding $100 million worth of Apple stock, also owned “the requisite Mercedes,” but that “success seems not to have spoiled the first folk hero of the computer age,” who still preferred according to an unnamed friend quoted, “to drive his motorcycle to my place, sit around and drink wine, and talk about what we’re going to do when we grow up.” Of more than passing interest is that not unlike Apple’s performance through the current economic recession, the company seemed to be weathering a late ‘82 downturn the microchip sector rather well, with revenues soaring 81 percent year-over-year and Apple occupying 22 buildings in Silicon Valley as well as having plants in Texas, Singapore, and Ireland. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. Read here for a scan and transcript, with photos, of the entire National Geographic article. A tip of the hat to Modern Mechanix for posting the article scan and to Peter Orosz of jalopnik.com for drawing my attention to this fascinating snippet of history.

Apple has recently updated its list of all the products it considers to be vintage and obsolete. Apple will stop providing spare parts and support for all these models starting next month. The list underlines that the PowerPC Mac is extinct, leaving few models still acceptable for maintenance. Apple includes products over 5 years but less that 7 years old ‘vintage’. The following Apple products are obsolete according to Apple: ·          iBook G4 (early 2004) ·          iBook G4 (14" early 2004) ·          eMac (USB 2.0) ·          Apple Cinema Display ADC ·          Apple Studio Display 15" ADC ·          Apple Studio Display 17" LCD ·          Apple Studio Display 17" ADC ·          Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) ·          Macintosh Server G4 (QuickSilver 2002) ·          PowerBook G4 (DVI) ·          iBook (14.1 LCD 16 VRAM ·          iBook (16 VRAM) ·          Base Station Airport (Dual Ethernet) We’re going to be pouring out a 40 for our lost compadres.  Apple’s list of Vintage and Obsolete hardware. So whattaya get when you cross an iPhone (or iPod Touch), the man who gave us Gil Grissom and Horatio Caine, and those tattoo-and-piercing-encrusted sweeties known as the Suicide Girls?  ” Seduce A Suicide Girl ,” that’s what.  (I was sure you’d know the answer to that one…) Yes, “CSI” creator Anthony Zuiker really did team up with the alt-pinup website, all the better to produce an Occidental version of Japanese “dating sim” programs.  Your task is to visit a comic-book store and try to chat up one Zoli Suicide (picture below, just so you can decide if she’s, y’know, really your “type”): Bungle your come-on, and Zoli will shoot you down in one of ten different ways.  However, get in touch with your inner Pickup Artist, and you’ll score a TVMA-rated makeout session with her. The app promises to be the first of a series (SG wants player input on who, and what, to feature in future episodes).  Meanwhile, if you’ve got US$0.99 and an ID that proves you’re at least 17 years old, Zoli — or at least a digital version thereof — is waiting for you.  (Owning the entire Nine Inch Nails discography wouldn’t be a bad idea, either…) [Steaming up iTunes even as we speak]

Apple Implements App Ratings/Restrictions for iPhone, iPod Touch

The fact that they included parental controls for games in the 3.0 beta sort of hinted at this, but along with the iPhone 3.0 update today came app ratings, which appear rather inconspicuously under the app’s price and buy button on the detailed info screen. It also appears next to an app’s name in the list view of the iTunes store browser. Interestingly, all apps appear to be getting a rating, as I checked out even one so innocuous as HP’s MediaSmart Server iStream app and found that it was “not yet rated.” It may be that all harmless utilities will receive this nondescript side-stepping of a rating going forward. Games, though, and apps like Exterminator – Shooter Sounds Massacre! (9+), definitely have been rated using Apple’s own internal standards. The ratings are are as follows, taken directly from iTunes: 4+ : Applications in this category contain no objectionable materials. 9+ : Applications in this category may contain mild or infrequent occurrences of cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence, and infrequent or mild mature, suggestive, or horror-themed content which may not be suitable for children under the age of 9. 12+ : Applications in this category may also contain infrequent mild language, frequent or intense cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence, and mild or infrequent mature or suggestive themes, and simulated gambling which may not be suitable for children under the age of 12. 17+ : You must be at least 17 years old to purchase this application. (emphasis in the original) Applications in this category may also contain frequent and intense offensive language; frequent and intense cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence; and frequent and intense mature, horror, and suggestive themes; plus sexual content, nudity, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs which may not be suitable for children under the age of 17. Sounds like we’ve got some exciting 17+ apps coming our way. And, without a doubt, endless debate as to the merit of Apple’s ratings system, and the categories they’ve devised, and which apps receive which ratings and why. A quick test of the restrictions found that they do indeed prevent me from downloading Exterminator with the settings turned down to 4+ and below only. You can view the app’s info screen in the App Store, but that’s as far as you’ll get.

Microsoft Finally Found a Group They Can Impress

Joe Wilcox has an article on Microsoft Watch about Microsoft’s new ads with kids. The series is called The Rookies , and there’s a second spot up. Joe is less impressed with the second spot than the first, but goes on to explain how these ads have potential, Microsoft needs more of them (I’m sure more are coming), the kid should get an ‘A’ on the project, etc. That’s all nice, but it misses an awkward thing about this whole series. Cute? Yes. I’ve liked them both. But then we all know kids and animals are everyone’s favorite commercial subjects. Still, why isn’t anybody stating the obvious? When you’re 4.5 or 7 years old you have no idea what the phrase “I’m a PC” is supposed to mean. Joe mentions the buzz Apple got with the old Switcher ads, but those were adults making real decisions

I gathered a bunch of pictures, all Mac, of course.

Some are not old enough, some are too old, some still look quite futuristic. Enjoy this stroll down Macintosh memory lane.

Share your thoughts and recollections if you had any of these, or still keep em’ around.

Happy 7th Birthday, iPod!

Filed under: iPod Family , Apple , iPhone , Apple History , iPod nano , iPod touch , iPod classic Gallery: iPods over the years It’s hard to believe that 7 years have passed since Steve took the stage and introduced our friend, the iPod . Over the past few years, the iPod has gone from new guy on the block to ” funnest ” guy on the block. While the basic design hasn’t changed much (for the Classic model at least), the features definitely have. When the iPod launched in 2001, it was basically a FireWire-capable hard drive and MP3 player — nothing more, nothing less. The first iPod sold for $399 for a 5GB version (which was Mac-only). Apple later came out with a 10GB version of the same iPod for $499. Here’s some fun facts about the first iPod via Mactracker : Codename: Dulcimer Dimensions: 4.02″ H x 2.43″ W x 0.78″ D Weight: 0.41 lbs. iPod OS: version 1.0, upgradeable to 1.5 Introduced: October 2001 Terminated: April 2003 Hard Drive: 4200 RPM in capacities of 5/10/20 GB To celebrate the iPod’s birthday, we have created a gallery to show the many changes over the years. If you want to brush-up on your iPod trivia, check out Wikipedia’s iPod page . If you have any happy (or unhappy) memories of the iPod, be sure to reminisce in the comments.
