Engineer and programmer Steve Capps, who worked on Lisa, the Finder and Macintosh system utilities, talks about his work on the original Macintosh team with the guys at RetroMac Cast in a two-part podcast ( episodes 115 and 116). Capps got started by automating a library in college, then went to do the same at Xerox before landing at Apple in 1981. He was chosen to work for the Mac team because he had “the right chops at the right time.” Capps was working on a printer drive for the Lisa team, when Steve Jobs lost interest in Lisa and put the steam behind the Mac, calling Capps over. “Great to talk about the old glory days,” Capps , who went on to work on Internet Explorer and MSN Explorer, said. Even after 25 years of Mac, Apple is growing like a high-tech start-up, according to Forbes magazine. An upcoming issue of the venerable business and money magazine places Apple at #14 on its annual list of the 25 fastest growing tech companies of the past year, which is quite a feat for a company as large as the Cupterino computer maker. To make the list, companies must have latest 12-month revenues of $25 million or more, annualized sales gains of at least 10% over the past five years and a profit over the past 12 months. In addition, a company must have a long-term consensus profit-growth forecast of at least 10%, annualized. Surprizingly, this is the first time Apple has made the list since Forbes began publishing it in 2003, but even more remarkably, many of the other companies on it are tiny in comparison to the House that Jobs built. With revenues of $33 billion per year, Apple is 60 times bigger than No. 1 on the list, biotech tool-maker Illumina (ILMN), and nearly 500 times bigger than No. 5, semiconductor designer Techwell. Apple has grown at an annualized rate of 40% per year over the past five years. The only other company of Apple’s size on the list – Google, with revenues nearing $22 billion and growing at the rate of 72% a year, good enough for the #2 spot. See the full list here . Via Fortune

The store’s exhibit includes an original Macintosh 128k signed by Steve Wozniak himself, a Lisa, the original Mac Portable, a Newton, a NeXT cube, the G4 Cube, various Powerbooks, the eMate, the legendarily laughable 20th Anniversary Mac, and the first iPod. If you happen to be in the New York area and want to get a first-hand look at the Mac’s evolution, be sure to stop by TekServe by Sunday, the exhibit’s final day. The event is free and open to the public. Tekserve is located at 119 West 23rd Street, just west of 6th Avenue. Store hours are Monday through Friday 9 am till 8 pm, Saturday 10 am till 6 pm, and Sunday noon till 6 pm. Via Macworld

In the last of our stories from owners of original and classic era Macs, we talk to Nigel Curson. His Mac Plus has seen action as a desktop publishing workhorse, early internet client, and now toy for kids. And it’s still going strong. How did this Plus come into your possession, Nigel? “If you don’t count my Sinclair ZX81 and Spectrum, it was my first home computer. I bought it in September 1988 just as I was about to leave a not-very-exciting computing job at Queen Mary College London. The Computer Centre at the time supported a range of mainframes, minis, a network of BBC B computers and quite a few Macs (PCs were actually quite thin on the ground). “I headed off, among other things, to work on a magazine about comics called Speakeasy (which I subsequently edited) so I needed a computer – and was by then a Mac convert. Including the external 40Mb hard disk it cost me around £1500.” What did it get used for, and replaced by? “Originally mostly for word processing, and a bit of DTP (if you haven’t tried to lay out an A4 double-page spread in PageMaker on one of those diddy screens, you haven’t lived). I eventually became editor of Speakeasy and then did a lot of writing/copy editing on it (although I had a niftier machine in my office at work). Also a bit of gaming.

Here’s an early Mac movie product placement. In the opening minutes of 1989’s “Back to the Future II,” Marty McFly lands in 2015, where hover cars loom, “Jaws 19″ in 3D plays in movie theaters and folks sport layered outfits that only a daltonic could love. In an antiques store, Michael J. Fox does a double-take over a “vintage” Mac sitting next to other 80s relics like a Dust Buster and a bottle of Perrier. Found on the excellent Starring the Computer , where James Carter has compiled a few other early Mac movie sightings including “ Manhattan Project ” and “ Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home ,” both from 1986. Anyone remember Mac movie appearances before 1986?
